Painting chequer plate
This week I resprayed my aluminium chequer plate on the rear quarters due to previous crap job from a well know dealer in cannock when i bought the car.

Anyway heres a little insight into it. Done on the cheap so don't judge Thumbs Up

Materials used:
Wire cup bit on battery drill
Etch primer
Gloss black spray not cars color code Embarassed
Lacquer spray
1200 grit wet n dry
Blue decoraters tape NOT masking tape Embarassed
And plastic sheets to cover panels for over spray
Degrease cleaner

So first i got to work with the wire cup drill bit.
Next degreased it and left to dry properly.
Tape off and cover surrounding areas to avoid overspray where not wanted.
Then 3 coats of the etch primer 20 mins between coats, left to dry for 24 hrs and rubbed down a little with wet n dry.
Next 3 coats of gloss black and left 24 hrs again and rubbed back a little.
Then 2 coats of lacquer and left to dry before unmasking.

If im honest im really happy with the result however please learn from my little mistakes Embarassed

Gloss black is not just 1 colour! Buy your colour code Laughing
Masking tape leaves sticky residue when it gets warm! I ran out of the blue decoraters tape half way through but the stuff is awesome and leaves no residue!

Bit of a crap 'how to' but I gave it a shot!

Very nice looking job. I’m fortunate in mine is bolted on and in satin black. So I removed and it gave me a chance to clean and wax the body behind the plate, and do all the prep and spraying in the garage. Plus satin is a more forgiving finish and I did not need a clear coat.
P.S good job on the clear coat, avoiding eggshell is hard and you can’t really use a da polisher on chequer plate to correct.

Yeah lacquering is something I've tried to get right for years now with trial and error, I've found applying it medium heavy best, trying to get to the point just before it would run and it dries nice and glossy
