Cleaned and installed the rocker assembly so could torque up the head bolts.
Need to adjust the gaps.

Thank you db950.

I was cleaning and inspecting the turbo/manifolds, and as I need space on the workbench, I thought why not temporarily put it on. I could not go without snapping a pic.

Yeah, made a huge difference in the way it looks.
So by now the manifolds are bolted.. cannot say permanently, but I hope not temporarily Rolling with laughter
Timing has been done, and adjusted valve clearances.
Exhaust downpipe connected too. Been contemplating if I should install a flexible coupling in the exhaust, just aft of the first connection. Recall that at a bit low revs, accelerating on level roads, used to have a very annoying resonance, which would then disappear as the revs build up. I always assumed is from the exhaust pipe. Only thing that was 'missing' from the exhaust was a bracket that bolts on the left gearbox mount, that connects to the exhaust pipe via some rubber bushing. That bracket is shown here as item 29:
https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-r...t_53421#29
That bracket had sheared at one of the folds, and the rest of the parts I had removed as soon as I purchased the 90.. probably due to metal - metal contact noise, but cannot recall.

I managed to get all parts from that assembly, except the heat shield, NTC5205 and its brackets. Currently one at on the bay - https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/651264548 , but for what it is Shocked

Engine is practically ready for its first start up Very Happy but will probably have to wait till next Saturday when I have more time. Perhaps in the meantime ensure that all electrics are good so I can start up through the ignition switch.

Thank you guys.

I do not know if it is allowed to add a link to another forum. If not, I can edit and remove the link.

https://forums.lr4x4.com/topic/100535-19j-rebuild-project/

This link is to a very nice and detailed 19J rebuild. I think I had read that thread at least 10 times before I undertook my 19J rebuild. Hats off to that poster.

Unfortunately, only a couple days ago, I found that his pistons had melted. So I was probably as down as the poster.... thinking that the same could happen to mine. I fully understand the fragility of these engines before I even embarked with my overhaul.. but it is the originality for me.

I bought my pistons from a large UK distributer. I honestly do not know the origin of the pistons I have, but sure they did not come in any green oval box and price tag. But they do have the same markings as what Turner engineering supply - https://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/etc-86...2x21071197

So I am really fingers crossed. At the moment the only thing that lifts me up is that the usage will be different. Mine will never see motorway miles, and it is on a lighter 90 that will not be used for towing. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Glad I did check the wiring. Problem and 'fix' described in this thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/post940701.html#940701

Some good news and bad news to report...

The engine starts and runs... needed some little adjustment to the idle speed. There is a slight hunt at idle, but I am hoping that would settle once it gets some use.

The bad news is that there is an oil leak at the back of the engine. I do not know exactly where it is coming from... but I have a feeling that the engine might have to come off for investigation. My main suspect is that I skimped a bit on sealant between the engine block and the flywheel housing (I really hate the sight of sealant oozing out of every joint on some engine builds). Unless it is the sump gasket (use paper gasket and sealant on both sides on the gasket). Sigh.. not something I was hoping for Big Cry

I had a look at the seat box too... now that will be delayed. The driver side panel has a bit of corrosion at the seat belt mount.. not a lot that needs replacing, but right above, under the seat one panel has cracked. So I decided to replace both.
I purchased a new side panel. The top panel I will fabricate. However, the new side panel does not have the 'recesses' where there would be 2 layers of aluminium. So a quick jig under the press, and made the recesses for 3 locations.

Had a look this morning, and found a bit more oil had dripped from the flywheel housing (unless it is capillary action on the concert floor) Embarassed
But if it really leaked more, as it seems to have done, then I really suspect that oil accumulated past the rear main bearing, between the engine block and the flywheel housing, has leaked further due to lack of sealant between the two. Interestingly, the 200tdi have a gasket there, but not the earlier engines. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

A bit of progress with the seat box repair. A piece of aluminium salvaged from a tub bulkhead following a bulkhead delete, and some hammering time, and the panel that goes under the seat is ready to be joined.
