I'm not sure it will be very interesting, it'll just tell us what we already know: firstly that they are all extremely good at what they are/were designed to do, secondly that the new one is designed for a completely different purpose and market to the old one, and thirdly that standards of refinement and usability have changed beyond recognition in the last 73 years.

Dealers are fitting the 'Option packs' to the cars! I would have thought that they would be fitted on the production line. 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

It would be nice to see a group test with series 1, Defender and new Defender.

There is no comparison, both in capability or in potential - Defender is light years different to a Series 1 and I can appreciate the difference in the driving experience between the two. Likewise, the new Defender is a dramatic evolution of the earlier versions - it retains the off-road credibility and actually takes it to a new level of capability.

The purists will argue that this takes away from the driving experience and makes everyone behind the wheel look far more capable than may be due to them, but the reality it that it’s truly an awesome bit of kit off road and (I think) looks pretty darn good in the flesh.

My off-road comments are based on following mules around the (restricted) engineering routes at Eastnor and seeing stuff that I probably shouldn’t have seen...

Sure, Series 1, Defender and new Defender would be an interesting comparison, but not sure it’s much of a real-world comparison as aesthetics and heritage are pretty subjective comparisons...

Don’t need it for the new either, that ones sitting in access height.

I think I read somewhere - although I may have made it up! - that the vehicles are locked down into a "delivery" mode, so can't access all the features, limited to a crawling speed, etc. Similar to some vehicles having a valet mode. Needs the dealer to plug it in and input release codes to make it all work.

Makes sense, I think a lot of features these days are activated at the dealers.

Sure I read that the 110 will get the option of coil suspension in the near future.

That would make a lot of sense, since modern transporters are always high-density and the result of the suspension pumping itself up during loading or unloading could be expensive.

In fact this sort of thing has been happening for years. For example, I believe that Disco2's left the factory in delivery mode one feature of which was to disable the odometer, so that when the car left the dealer it wouldn't show any miles driven prior to PDI.

I know that when they ship air suspended LR products by sea the suspension is in a “transportation” mode to prevent the cars wobbling in bad weather and touching the vehicles around them that are only about 2-3 cms apart and also to prevent the system being damaged when the cars are lashed down in the car deck so I expect cars on a transporter to have similar treatment. I know something is activated as there are tell tale paper strips in the wheel arches and I found one on a one of my new RRS’s a few years ago that stated on it that it was to be removed before delivery and it hadn’t been which made me query with the dealership how thoroughly the PDI had been done...... they sent a flat bed recovery truck out immediately to collect the car from my house and take it into the workshop for a full inspection ........ I got the car back a few hours later with a note that they had found nothing out of pace and the person Doing the PDI had forgotten to remove the telltale! Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

They go well over the speed limit on M40 all the time. Pretty poor show by JLR to allow obvious test vehicles to be driven like that on a public road. Speed limits don't seem to apply on Warwickshire back roads either. Evil or Very Mad 2011 110 USW

Each time I see a side view, I think 'maybe'. Then a picture like the above appears - no thanks.

That's just a nod to the engineering heritage when they used to get up to all sorts of speeds on the local roads...I'm reading the "record" was 185mph in 1964 - although not by a Land Rover!
