Should I treat/paint new galvanized parts?
Hello all.

I should be replacing the mid cross member on my 2000 td5 110 this weekend with a new yrm galvanized one. I had hoped to do it last Sunday but 20 year old fixings slowed me down a tad and the afternoon I had put aside to do this job very quickly disappeared 🤣 anyway. With the side steps already off the car and all the rear floor fixings either replaced or very well copper slipped I should have the floor up and out of the way within minutes and get onto installing the cross member.

My question is, is there any real benefit to giving the galvanized coating a little help with a coat of metal paint before I fit it or just fit it as is? I was going to give it a paint but then wondered why as it's already protected?

Just wondering what other people's opinions are.

If you can, absolutely. Zinc will still corrode over (a long) time, eventually leaving bare steel to rust, so additional protection delays the onset of this. If you paint it now, it can be easier to touch up or repaint at a later date than it is to renew the zinc. I also think paint helps protect the zinc from stone chips, albeit minimally.

If not, it's not going to be the end of the world. You'll still get a much longer lifespan out of a galvanised part than the original one.

Before you paint it you need to clean it well, you generally also need a special primer as well for galvanised steel DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Don't bother painting. My galvanised door strips are from 1984. No rust.

Make sure your take care off your chassis where the crossmember is covering the chassis. My 2001 chassis is in a good shape except where the crossmember is sitting. Roel

Magic, thanks for taking the time to reply.

I'll treat the chassis below the crossmember for sure. I was going to treat as much of the chassis as i can thats exposed when i have the floor up too.

Appreciate the advice.
