They're two different but related things. Crystal headlights are indeed a straight swap improvement for the existing ones.

The uprated loom is designed to engineer out the poor design of the existing wiring that sees all of the power for the lights being drawn through the switch by introducing relays into the circuit. This not only prevents the switch burning out but can also deliver a higher voltage (the full, correct voltage) to the lights that can make them brighter.

You can do one modification or the other without any issue. For best possible results though, do both together.

Thank you for your reply LRA, yes it does help

Of course it leads to another question; would the new lighting loom be easy to fit if purchased ie would it come with instructions etc as electrickery isn't one of my fortes?
I have noticed that people have mentioned that a new loom may be alternator biased so if you took your live feed from the battery I guess it would have to be extended with the correct rated cabling?

I can agree wth all the replies which say that an upgraded loom, and direct wiring will make a big difference to light output.

Lonewolf - on your question about ease of installation, I'm not an electrical whizz, but it is pretty straightforward. I wouldn't take issue with the point about wiring back to the battery, but I didn't myself. I just took it from the back of the alternator and there have been no problems.

Others are available, but I got mine from Landreiziger in Dordrecht/Netherlands and the quality was good, along with reasonable instructions. They have an option with ceramic H4 connectors for the headlamps, and it's just 'plug and play' - you connect it all up; plug in one of the existing/original headlight plugs into the new loom, and off you go.

In a combination of that and the crystals I'd very subjectively say the light output was about 20% brighter than my original lights and wiring. Donald

I’ve now been looking at the landreiziger loom which I like, €56.50, unfortunately I don’t have multilingual skills and therefore can only look at the photos and not read the Dutch blurb.
What I did notice was that there was also a picture of a switch, is that part of the loom kit?
I also checked out the 90 second video which although brief was informative, but didn’t mention a new switch, perhaps it’s an extra?
Any help appreciated.

Ah. I think they must have changed their website a little, as I'm pretty sure there used to be a bit of English in there somewhere - or maybe a language tab top right. Doesn't seem to be there anymore, or perhaps it's because I'm looking at the site via an ipad which is bringing up a 'mobile device' version.

I would just cut and paste the text into 'google translate' - it'll give you the gist, or phone them during the week. Martin speaks pretty good English.

When I got my loom, there was no additional headlight switch incuded. It's probably there to illustrate the point that the loom mod takes the full headlight current away from that switch, which is a known weak point. Donald

Update: I used my laptop and web translator and got the spiel in English: the loom is 40.5 euros or for 16 euros more you get a switch which is to replace a burnt out one if that was the case.
I also discovered what a winkelwagen is too...….its a shopping trolley.....you learn something everyday

Sure someone mentioned on here that the extra loom isn't required on the later Puma's due to how they have been re-wired??

You could make up exactly the same thing yourself for a fraction of that price. A few lengths of cable at 1.37 a metre and a couple of relays at about 2.50 each, relay bases at 1.62 each and connectors at 1.20 for a pack of 10
Total cost about 15 quid It is not a Defender, it is a One_Ten
