Steering help
Got a load noise for the power steering pump steering went stiff the belt has slight wear on the one side .
How much resistance should there be when you turn the pump wheel? .
I've turned the steering from side to side now the noise has stopped and steering is back to normal.

Anyone tell me if the pulley on the power steering pump should spin freely or have resistance

At slow speed your power steering pump will spin freely only way to test the out put presser with gauge kit

see link to work shop Manual show power steering pump testing

Found it.
The belt was just on the edge, looks like the shaft has come loose.

I’ve had a couple of shafts fail on 300tdi PS pumps over the years, end up with fore aft movement on the shaft, mileage / age doesn’t seem to come into it.

One I did do to the last one , was the penny trick behind the pulley tensioner to stop the belt squeaking , whether this didn't help I'm not sure.
