this ran ok but did show faults when read on a hawkeye.

be careful on CPS sensors lots of new ones don't work correctly fresh from the box, buy a better quality one if poss and if it doesnt cure it then keep it as a spare .

i wouldnt drive it far but these things take time to find and more time to cure.

Fit a new injector harness anyway, it’s cheap and easy to change.

Hi All,

I thought I'd give you all an update as the defender has just been returned to me. Before I do, I just want to say here (and I will post in the general section also) how fantastic the service provided by Jones Bros 4x4 up in Ryll was. Whilst the Defender was just inside warranty, Jones Bros have been extremely accommodative. Not only have they gone above and beyond to provide a great service, but they have also paid for my warranty work to be completed at my parents' local indy Rockingham Landrovers in Leicestershire to save me having to drive all the way from London to Wales.

After a horrendous journey up from London to Leicestershire (9 hours, an absolute richard of an AA callout refusing to call a tow truck culminating with 2 hours on the side of the a14 at 2 in the morning) I finally managed to limp the defender to rockingham.

- they could not recreate the issue despite driving it for approx 75m
- there were no faults recorded re. crank position sensor and wiring appeared fine
- as per instruction from Merv at Jones they installed a new injector harness (the previous harness showed no real signs of wear and tear)
- there was no more oil in the ECU
- Upon re-priming the system after the Injector replacement, they couldn't get the car to start
- Traced the issue back to the fuel pump, to find that it had been wired up back to front.
- Issue solved and back on the road from today

Very excited to have my pride and joy back - fitting a few miscellaneous bits and pieces this weekend so see some updates to my build thread next week. Have been told to keep my eye on the oil level to ensure it doesn't rise over the next few trips.

From what I was told, there is a specific wiring order on the fuel pump. And the order was wrong. Rockingham was asked to replace the injector harness by the dealers I bought the car from and then after replacing the rocker cover they couldn’t get it to fire.

Long story short it was a fuel pump issue.

Hopefully the last issue for some time.

in order for pump motor wired wrong pump has to be removed and two spade connector reversed see top pump motor red and black wire and engine will not start as the two stages of the pump are working wrong around if fuel presser is below 1bar at the injections engine will not start

so what your saying is its impossible for it to have run if the pump had been miswired. Cheers

Thanks very much for the detailed reply Dorset.

I appreciate the skepticism from you all and see it as one of the strongest aspects of this forum that people will call out the bull from mechanics attempting to 'have-over' people who are ignorant of the workings of the defender (like me).

In fairness, the issue appears sorted as I did another 30 miles in it yesterday and the engine didn't miss a beat. I wonder if it's possible that the pump had been wired incorrectly not at the pump end. Either way the work was carried out under warranty so I am not out of pocket. I suspect there might also be an aspect of dumbing down to make it easier for me to understand.

I will let you know if I have any update or if the problem rears its ugly head.
