Front Fog/Spotlight Switch Issue
Hi all!

I've had a light bar installed and wired up to a genuine front fog switch (YUG000540LNF). The switch works and the orange tell-tale LED comes on as it should. So that's all fine. However, the green backing light does not work as it should.

When the dash lights are on with the headlights the new switch does not light up. Then, when the switch is turned ON the orange LED illuminates and so does the green back light, but only when the dash lights are ON. When the headlights are OFF, the green back light does not come on when the switch is operated.

My first thoughts were that the switch was fautly - which it could be. I'm now wondering if it could be an earth fault, e.g. the earth for the switch is in the wrong position (I believe one of the earth connections is left intentionally blank looking at a diagram).

I have very minimal knowledge when it comes to electrics (at best!) so any ideas would be glady recieved!

Thanks in advance! Charlie

Update: the switch is not faulty. Is it the relay then? Charlie

The back lighting should have its own feed from an orange cable, I used a tap off from one of the original switches on the dash.

This orange cable should be connected to pin 2

Pin 3 or 4 should be connected to earth.

Pin 5 connected to the blue with white trace cable which is the full beam power wire.

And pin 1 should be connected to terminal 85 on your relay.

The switch is an earth switching switch rather than a power one... 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

Just checking - is this last wiring diagram the best way to wire in spots (with direct connection between 30 and 86) when wiring spots without high beam trigger (just on-off switch)?

Without a switch, pin 85 on the relay would need to be connected directly to earth for it to work. Darren

LRAnorak - sorry I didn't quite understand. I am using the switch, but not a high beam trigger.

I have it wired as per above diagram, and it works. Just wondering if the relay link is the best way of doing it.

Ah, sorry - my mistake. I can see where you've altered the original diagram now.

Yes, that would work fine. The switch is used to earth the relay coil, which has a permanent live supply. Darren

If you wanted the bar to work only with head lights, then do away with the red link between pins 30 and 86 and connect a head light feed on to relay pin 86.

I wanted to keep the spots separate from headlights, so used as per diagram above. Working well through the bearmach switches for spots and rear work light.

Hi,

Don't laugh at me for this question but, how do I connect the ground/earth from the switch? Can I splice into a ground wire from another switch?

Cheers
Ben

Yes you can although any convenient earth point will do. Darren

Hi again!

I was wondering: does the switch have to be grounded in order to complete the circuit and work, or is that only for the lights on the switch?

Cheers
Ben
