2.4 TDCI stuttering at 65mph
Help!!!

Loosing the will to live on this one.

My 2.4 TDCI has a funny fault in that at around 65mph it starts to stutter, feels like fuel starvation. I have tried driving to 5th gear and it does it still at around 65mph.

I have changed the MAF, MAP and the EGR. Have run fuel system cleaner through it many times. No faults come up on my nanocom. I can see the fuel rail pressure when it does this stuttering, and it’s allnover the place.

Have had the Turbo actuator off .. all seems free and using a camera I can see movement under load.

Through the gears and up to 65 it drives perfectly. Also checked the speed limiter setting ..... it’s set to 140kph and in the past when abroad I have managed to hit the limiter. Can’t get the car to go any faster than 65, at at that speed feels like someone is turning the fuel off.

My thoughts for the next steps ....

Change the accelerator pedal - seen conflicting info that D% and E% should total 100% - and on the other hand .... seen that they should be the same ...... my values are almost the same

VCV - seems to be a common issue

Clutch switch ??

Brake switch ??

Really am fed up with it ....

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated

Well that rules out EGR blanking. It does sound VCV related. Does it hunt when first started from cold? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

The rev hunting can be sporadic too, mines does a little then not at all sometimes. Diesel$ Live$ Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️ RED, WHITE & BOOST! 🇬🇧

Have you checked the coolant level?
If it's a little low it can cause the cylinder head temperature sensor to cut in giving the symptoms of fuel starvation/hitting the rev limiter.
I don't suppose that it will be so simple, but simple is a good place to start! Thumbs Up

Hello Shropshire

Thanks for the reply

Yes, coolant is good.

Also changed the VCV today for a genuine ford item not cheap! The guy on the parts desk said they normally change the pressure sensor at the same time - so that’s on order now. Also the pressure relief valve ... may as well do it all.

Into the world of changing random parts now.

Also Just ordered another replacement MAF .... genuine this time rather than OEM type - a genuine CHT sensor.

Next will try the turbo actuator

Of course changing one at a time to see when (being positive here) it clears!!

In the back of my mind ..... can’t help thinking it’s like the speed limiter coming in .... but it did go all the way to 85mph in the past

Then .... it will have to go an independent .....

My Revs are fine ...

Pulls like a train .... just hits a wall at 65 mph and struggles to get past it regardless of gear in pedal input.

On the keep it simple theme - could the wiring harness be chaffing around some speed/pressure related sensor, they are known to rub and this can cause very odd problems? Maybe giving a false reading to the speed limiter?
I expect you will anyway but it's always worth giving the connectors to sensors a squib of contact cleaner.
Be lucky Thumbs Up

Thank again

Yes checked all that .... although it could still be the problem and I just can’t find it. I would expect duff readings that I could see on my nanocom .... but everhkng looks fine. Upto the point it plays up as 65moh .... all readings seem correct.

Am wondering is it’s skmoly crap in the fuel tank and fuel lines and the pump just can’t pull the fuel in fast enough ..... it started off last year with just doing it occasionally. So found a complete set of fuel lines and a cooler on eBay that I can clean up and for next weekend. Suppose or should clean the fuel tank out as well.

Then there is just the priming process ..... my let my local indie do it for me.

If it was lack of fuel would it not do it at high engi e revs lower speed.

Is it always bang on 65mph? And it never goes over 65mph?0 Cheers

Thanks for the reply JST

Used to be fine all the way to the speed limiter around 85mph

Noticed last year it had a few hiccups then it would pass.

Now it won’t go beyond about 65, noticed this yesterday trying to pass another car on a dual carriageway ..... just refused, nearly got to 70 after about a mile of trying. Really massive stuttering like an old V8. Thought it could be the throttle pedal but the nanocom seems to show it working fine.

The frustration is that through the gears and upto 65 it goes really well, smooth idle, turbo running up nicely. Can’t see anything obvious via the nanocom other than at 65 the fuel rail pressure is fluctuating by about 20MPA .... it’s liek someone is lifting my foot of the pedal.

Thanks for the reply Blackwolf

VCV already changed today although I don’t have the pump learn facility on my nanocom so will have to wait till it goes to my indie. Devided opinion is that it will relearn over time anyway. Is it true?
