TD5 harmonic damper
Should l replace this item?
As my 2004 110 TD5 is at 106,000 miles. I think l posted on here before about it, and l read that it can fail completely causing some damage.
The engine does “chirp” when you shut it off but always has done. The thing is, the part from LR is about £400 and not something l think l could fit myself.
Is there any way to check whether it’s still serviceable?

My local LR specialist didn’t seem too concerned about replacing it, when l asked them. They thought it was “fine, as they rattle when worn out”

Yes l was involved in that thread and was going to change it as a service item until l found out that the part is £400 plus fitting.

Now l want to know if l really need to change it.

Explanation was for Procta’s question.

But understand your question, I did 186thou in my previous Td5 without any probs and it always chirped.

Don’t all Td5s chirp?

A chirp when you stop the engine can indicate a worn harmonic damper.
But it’s only what l have read.

Our Td5 also chirps regularly but the damper is still OK. Turner engineering has them for £145.

I have just had the same dilemma, Mine chirped on switch off, for other reasons i took out grill, intercooler and radiator, removed belt and inspected HD as best I could (there was no play in it at all and the rubber looked as new).So I just replaced belt, both idlers and tensioner and now chirp has gone.
