I'm having the same issues too! Also an 2004 TD5. Rang my mechanic before Christmas, and it sounds like the starter motor solenoid is going bad. Booking it in to get it fixed early in the New Year.

Sounds like starter solenoid to me. If the battery is in good health and all of the connections and ground points are good then that is the most likely cause. It's a common failure point.

Was it damp when you had the issue??
Before you swap out the starter or RIP anything to bits, try and wiggle the wires on the starter motor. I had a issue with mine and it was intermittent but would leave me stranded. I was told during one event to try and move the starter wires. Low and behold it worked. When I got it home I disconnected the battery, cleaned all the contacts and added electrical grease and it's been spot on since. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car) 2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

Thanks for the suggestion; I am having a look this morning. It wasn't really damp; I garage it overnight and the problems have been on short trips rather than after a good soaking or taking it through thick mud. it will be worth a try, though.
