My opinion, if it failed at 32k miles, go for Ashcroft. Thats because it can allow a bit more misalignment, and if it has to go again, you replace the shaft only, not the gearbox or transfer case. There is no information/data of what happens with a solid shaft when there is misalignment. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Dinnu, thanks for the feedback. I guess any replacement will be stressed if misaligned.

That is the hypothesis. Some Defenders can reach very good milage, some not, and the most plausible root cause is misalignment between the gearbox and the transfer case. These are mated with an adaptor housing, both ends are doweled, so most likely some had higher inaccuracies than others. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

It is four years since I posted in this thread. Five years since the shaft was replaced Og shaft was replaced at 40k with genuine parts. Now on 112k and all good. Alignment will be the same so why has one lasted so much longer than the other?

Whose theories?

Maybe all theories are not equal?

Genuine replacement included grease...factory install excluded grease, Ashcroft solution is to wet a dry spline.

Go figure...

Other than stating the obvious?

you may find there's a very large number of wet installs that have failed.
take my second failure for example.
