During the course of a lot of faffing around with headlight bulbs, I decided to remove the front light guards:

I'm not sure whether this will be a permanent change, not least because of the holes that are left in the wings, but there's no denying that it makes changing bulbs and cleaning lights a damn sight easier. Darren

It does make a lot of difference with the grills off to clean and maintain the front lights and imo i prefer the grills off Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up. Keeper.

Yeah, probably. I expect I'll be driven to do something about the holes in the bodywork at some point, though. Darren

I would put some screws back in and paint them the same colour as the body, or just put some black ones in for the sake of it.

This is why i hate upgrades/ face lifts that require drilling. When you come to take them off, you have to deal with the holes sadly. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Yeah, maybe. If I do leave them off then I'll probably get them filled and painted but I'm still not sure so won't be rushing into it. Darren

JVC KD-X561DBT Head Unit

On my list of things to do is to install a reversing camera and I'd been working up to an install involving a separate screen mounted above the rear view mirror and cut down sun visors, which was going to be a complete faff. Then, somebody here posted a link to this JVC unit that includes a built-in screen and easy camera connectivity, which looked like a great idea. One birthday present later and I have the unit in my hand!

The first job was to remove the original Alpine head unit, which came out easily enough with the help of a small screwdriver to release the locking tabs. It's also necessary to remove the mounting cage by bending out the various locking tabs and with all of the cables disconnected, I was left with this:

The harness multiplug was connected to a dedicated Alpine adapter, which had already been removed in the above picture. The picture below shows it next to the standard ISO adapter lead that's required for the JVC unit:

The original adapter included the white fir tree fixing on the grey plug that secured it to matching holes in the dash structure. It was necessary to pull this fixing out in order to release the plug. The new lead is quite a lot shorter though, which means it's not possible to re-use this fixing.

As well as the loom adapter, I needed a variety of other leads for the features that I want, although not all have been installed at this stage:

The Connect2 DAB splitter is to enable the existing aerial to be used to receive both DAB and analogue signals. I haven't installed this yet as it needs an ignition live feed, which I didn't have chance to provide.

The RCA 'Y' adapter is required to convert the two separate leads from the factory Alpine sub to the single connection on the JVC head unit.

The 2 channel camera switch will eventually form part of my reverse camera install with two separate cameras and again, has not yet been fitted.

With the new cage installed and the ISO lead and RCA 'Y' adapter in place, it's ready for the new head unit:

The JVC unit, lacking a CD player, is a lot shorter than the factory fitted Alpine:

And the JVC unit in place:

Whilst I've still got some work to do to install cameras and the microphone (the Alpine one isn't compatible), the basic unit is very nice. The sound is great and the existing sub works fine. It's also a lot more intuitive to use than the Alpine, in large part because of the screen and the additional information that it can display. Darren
