Apparently you can buy a "Faraday pouch" from Amazon to combat this £25 + though

£25? They are only lined with tinfoil. You can get wallets and other pouches for a couple of quid on ebay.

£25 is clearly too much, I was just quoting what I saw on another forum

I use a McVities Faraday cage, works just as well and saved me £25.

Apparently leaving ones keys in the fridge can shield them from scanners, just do not be in too much haste to put then in your trouser pocket in the morning

Not wishing to detract from the gravity of the original point of this thread, but I really just don't get the point of all this keyless entry thing, it seems to me to be yet another example of a solution looking for a problem that doesn't exist and then creating more security problems in the process.
How hard can it be to simply press a keyfob button when next to the car, or even shove the key in a hole and turn it, is all the extra technology really justified? |

'Convinence' I think you'll find. Because pressing a button AND pulling the handle to open the door is just far too troublesome. Who would want to be bothered with that?!
![]() But yes I think it's a combination of manufacturers making solutions to 'problems' that don't exist and also consumers demanding it. If there was no demand then surely they wouldn't do it? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

On our campsite we have to jump start people all the time because the car is 'ready' to drive all the time because it can detect the keys through the caravan walls or indeed tent. Generally they are unlocked as well as the key is within range

Unlikely, since the protocols are different. Technically it's easy enough to do, but it is only recently that the technology has become small enough to be battety powered and cheap. A Chinese firm has now demonstrated phone-sized devices that will work up to 320m and cost under $20.
![]() If you're interested, look for research by Boris Danev. If you have a car with PKE, keep the all the keys in tins at all times when you're not actually driving the car (including times like paying for fuel, etc). PKE systems really are pointless, and, when the appalling vulnerabilities and troublesome countermeasures are considered, are more hassle and less secure than RKE systems like those on late Defenders. Provided that you make sure that the vehicle really has locked when you press the button (to defeat the simplest vulnerability of these systems), RKE systems are not easy to open. this is what happens when things get more technical. I saw a documentary about it all years ago. Was shocking on what tech the thieves have! Once stolen, they can just deactivate the tracker with some tricky software from a laptop. Then the car is packed up and sent out of the country.
Seen them use a fob jammer too, for central locking on older cars. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back In the words of my Good Friend, Gary Forrest 1980 -2025 " we will work something out" |
