To be fair, it's not a fault of the technology or even the idea, it's simply the way they have been implemented. The car industry is about as concerned with the electronic security of it's products as Microsoft were/are. The important thing is for it to work so the customer is happy without actually considering what might happen if someone wants to defeat the system so they leave huge holes in the security because it's not high on their priority list and most of their customers don't care.
It's not that difficult to devise a system which would prevent a simple relay being used to extend the range it's just that the engineers never considered it a threat so didn't bother. Same reason that many of the "intelligent" cars of today can be hacked into remotely without any real difficulty. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/
