United Kingdom 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Orkney Grey
Test driving a new Grenadier today.

I really fancy one.

The hardest part would be selling my Defender! I thought my Defender would be the car I owned to the grave!

Part of me is hoping not to like the Grenadier Wink Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

I know just what you mean, but I think you will be disappointed to find that you like it a great deal. I was seriously impressed when I finally saw some close-up and in the flesh and I am now trying hard (but unsuccessfully) to forget all about them.

So.. Drove the Grenadier on Friday. First impressions were "wow" this is brilliant! Lovely seats, great driving position, lots of features to enjoy! The ride is awesome for a vehicle of this type. handling is very good, and even pushing it on bumpy bends that would have a "proper" Defender wobbling around, the Grenadier never gets ruffled. Auto box is a peach. Low revs at motorway speeds, drops into 8th (top) gear just over 50mph on a feathered throttle (approx 1500 revs). At a given engine speed, it revs about 10% lower in top gear than my 6-sp Puma. Off road we know the Grenadier is awesome.

BUT - the one I drove was petrol engine (known as the B58 I believe). It was thrashy. Very thirsty. I reset the trip data about halfway round the drive (the sales guy let us out on our own!), and the average MPG (driving like miss daisy) was 22.9 mpg!!!

I would definitely not have petrol.

Hoping the Diesel (BMW B57 engine) is much better. Looking at the BMW X5 data, the petrol engine gets woeful MPG (like 29mpg) but the B57 diesel, in an X5 can apparently reach 40mpg on a run.... I know the Grenadier is heavier and less aerodynamic than an X5, but I expected better

I definitely won't be buying a Grenadier unless it gets better MPG than my twelve year-old 110 (I almost always get over 30mpg, often 33 mpg... plus I have no Ad-Blu costs either).

Hopefully I will get a spin in a diesel soon...

Overall I really like the Grenadier, but I hope they have made the right engine choice with BMW engines. My Ducato is heavier than the Grenadier (it's a motorhome), and has a 2.3 diesel with 9-sp auto. It manages 35 mpg most of the time. I think Ineos may have made a better decision to put a commercial van engine in instead... I'm sure someone like Iveco or similar would make a cracking, torquey diesel, with a very long duty-cycle at lower cost that the BMW B57... (or even a Mercedes OM654)

Failing my attempts to like the Grenadier (it's only the engine and mpg that is a concern), it looks like I may be throwing a few grand at Ashcroft and putting an Auto in my 110, and keeping it another 10 years!!! Smile There's nothing else on the market to interest me, and prise me out of the 110 I've owned for 12 years (since new - mine is one of the very last 2.4's)

I really expected to fall in love with the Grenadier, and be putting my Defender on the market, but based on my experience so far (with the petrol engine) it's not for me. Fingers crossed for the diesel or I will be retrieving the deposit I paid on the Grenadier a few months ago... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

The book figure for the diesel is 25mpg so I think you’ll be disappointed.

It is a shame given that a 30+ year old Land Rover can do over 30mpg, but the Grenadier is much heavier (~2,700kg) and I guess the modern engine, while beautifully torquey and mated to the wonderful 8-speed ZF, is hampered by all the normal emissions stuff.

Harry took it on a weigh bridge and it was 2900kg. So with driver only you only have 600kg left. Vosa will have fun pulling these in.

Funny you should say that. Some years ago an Iveco diesel transplant was a popular choice in Defenders. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
