Having driven 150,000 miles in old Defenders since 2006 they are a great vehicle with real character but are compromised on road particularly.

Yes you can buy a lovely old model Defender that doesn't need doing up, for around £25,000 (TD5) or £30,000 (TDCi)

But, drive one before claiming it would be a better bet than a new Grenadier. l loved my old Defender but the Grenadier is in a different league, on road at least.

Off road either vehicle would be great. lf my adventures were taking me through Africa l would be happy in an old 300tdi, or a new Grenadier.

But for day to day use, it would be the Grenadier.

My problem is the cost and unknown reliability of the Grenadier. If you log onto the specific forum, deliveries are happening but so are the issues. PDI quality is patchy and fault rectification isn’t even at LR standards.

For £46k you can have a Toyota LWB LC Active in 7 seat config on the road and a proved 2.8 D4D under the hood. Might not be the worlds best most powerful or refined engine but that thing will take you there and back and 10 yr warranty if serviced at Toyota.

Last time we went to Morocco in the Defender, we vowed to do it again only in something that wouldn’t destroy our backs and ears for the drive down… so we won’t take the 110 next time. 1951 80" S1 2.0

Its a new car. They are bound to have issues. All my LRs have had issues, including my new Defender. Mind you, the biggest issue with that was the dealer! Twisted Evil Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

Defender9 , that’s my son you were talking to. He came home in one yesterday so had a good look round. My only complaint was it does need sidesteps, nearly fell out of the car trying to get out, wife couldn’t even get in. 110 XS 250 MY 23 Gondwana Stone, Cold climate pack and towbar

Bizarrely after passing the dealership on the A59 last night, I was overtaken by a Grenadier on the motorway this afternoon, they really do have some presence. The other half immediately said that’s what the new defender should have been!

Slight side note, the 3ltr BMW engines mean they can shift! Seemed to have plenty of grunt for overtakes.

I would have to tax a Grenadier as a private vehicle, even if I bought the commercial variant. The yearly road tax would be €2,400 or £2,086. The two seat would start at €71,995 or £62,606. We would need the middle row for our daughter so the price goes up. The five seat starts at €99,995 or £86,935. Those prices are for the base models.I think I can safely say I will not be in the market for one, but like I said I do like them.
It is coming in cheaper than the new Defender but the annual road tax is the same
My 110 200tdi comes at a yearly road tax of €56 or £48.70. as it is now classed as vintage. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

46k is also madness for a pick up truck, i know a chap with a pig farm who got so sick of expensive modern pick ups not lasting he bought a 3k tdv8 l322 s as the new farm truck

A good pick up for real work needs a decent 3 litre motor, 6 speed manual and no fancy nonsense. Another chum has the 1.9 Izuzu which he loves but it struggled with his heavier sheep trailer

I have a pal who owns a large pig, beef and arable farm with good shooting. He runs 4 VW Amarak, 3 Toyota pickups and various other wagons including a bombproof Ford Transit 4x4 that should be in a museum! Both pick ups are apparently as practical as each other, but he says the VW is smoother. He's also got a MY22 110 V8 as his personal wagon and is awaiting two Grenadiers for delivery for the shoot

In the end its down to personal preference. However, he no longer runs older Defenders..... Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

I suppose some people see these as tools to do a job. If a tool more suitable to the job comes along they will buy it. If they have bad experience of one tool they go for something else. It's hard to know why someone choses one tool or car over another. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

To my knowledge the first Grenadier that is used as a trophy vehicle (Superkarpata Trophy, Romania).
