Excessive Oil Consumption
Hi All
I was told this morning by one of my neighbours that he is currently using one litre of oil a week in his 2014, (warranty expired January),Puma 110. As the vehicle has only done 38000 miles would someone be able to suggest a starting point for investigating this. There does not appear to be any external visible signs of any leak.
Thanks very much for your help Big Cry

Hi there,

Have a look at this thread. Some pointers in there.

Check engine blowby first by pinchin the engine breather hose, it should take a while until noticeable pressure builds up. If pressure builds up very fast, blowby is too high.

In this case tell him to check the injectors copper seals...... cheap to solve in this case...

If the seal is leaking, engine eats oil by suction from the camshaft room.

Using the wrong oil seriously ruins the engine.

Bumping this thread as I am experiencing the same issue.

About 3 weeks ago the oil warning light came on so I topped up with approximately 4 litres. Checked daily and all was well, short trips only, then dipstick went from full to half after 2 x 250 mile motorway journeys.

No visible leaks or smoke and engine seems to be running fine.

Any ideas?

@Swine&Small. Did your mate get to the bottom of this?

Edit: It's a 2010, 2.4 , 75000 miles

Got a 2011 2.4, granted it only does about 4,000 a year but it has never used any oil between services.

Nor did mine.

In fact it has been pretty much faultless.

Until now...

Thanks for the reply

My motorway driving was definitely harder than my usual pootle to/from work, engine was no doubt working harder, but I wasn't hammering it. I'll check that out.

I need to top up my 2010 2.4.

Is Castrol EDGE Professional C1 5W-30 ok?

Hi , Sorry for the delay in the response . My neighbour has only just got back to me.
Injector seals turned out to be the culprit.
All fixed at back to normal now.

Good to know. Or at least a good place to start. Injector seals and turbo oil seals.

I would strongy suggest your neighbour, after changing the cupper (sold for the price of gold) injector seals, also disassembles the oil sump to have a quick check for carbon particles, especially in the oil strainer! If there was carbon 'hanging' on the injector there will be carbon inside the engine.
