Recently the Defender seemed to develop a running issue at idle - but only after driving for around an hour.
It would cruise along quite happily but then when I came to a stop it would run roughly, almost as if it was running on three cylinders. Sounded like a Subaru on light throttle but then picked up again at higher revs. It felt as though one cylinder wasn’t getting fuel which was obviously apparent at idle but masked by the other cylinders/rotational mass at higher revs. After “the France incident” I suspected something wasn’t right with one or more injectors so figured this was a good place to start. A resistance test of each injector suggested they were all ok… I tested for signal at each injector harness connector using a noid test light which confirmed that each injector was getting power/pulse. Each fuel line to injector was getting fuel… So when the engine went into this rough idle state I pulled over and unplugged each injector one by one. Unplugging injector 1 caused the engine to almost die Unplugging injector 2 caused the engine to almost die Unplugging injector 3 caused the engine to almost die Unplugging injector 4 made no change to the running of the engine, it continued to run on three cylinders. Which suggested injector 4 was defective. I ordered a brand new (not reconditioned) Denso injector, fitted it, coded the ECU, got the engine up to temperature and did the injector learn process… Bingo, the engine has run lovely since so fingers crossed this marks the end of my engine woes? Time will tell… Interestingly when I removed the old injector the tip was bone dry, clean with slight rust - looked as though it had not been fuelling for quite some time. Probably since it stuck itself open in France! Moral of the story - don’t waste your time with reconditioned injectors, buy new. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge > 110 XS Double Cab |

Two 150 mile journeys done on the weekend. Defender is running well - plenty of grunt and no rough idle. Feeling hopeful that the injector was the last of the gremlins > 110 XS Double Cab

Three months on and with plenty of miles under my belt since faulty injector four was replaced... The engine hasn't missed a beat and the power delivery now its firing on on all cylinders is quite something. Hoping to do the North Coast 500 this year. > 110 XS Double Cab

Look forward to seeing yours but for me it doesn’t make sense whilst the 2.4 runs well. Maybe one day if it dies a death.
NC500 looks great! Just need a second mortgage cover the fuel ![]() |

Injector cover has been cracked since I've owned the Defender which bugged me, but not enough to pay £55 for a new one. Recently picked up a genuine replacement from ebay

Back in April
![]() I ordered a new JLR part 11th April but by mid June it was still on backorder so I cancelled and went for an OEM replacement. New part arrived within two days and I fitted it today - fiddly but ten mins later I now have blowers on speed 1, 2 and 3 again ![]() New OEM part on the left, original one on the right ![]() Click image to enlarge > 110 XS Double Cab |

Sailed through another MOT this morning. Did have one advisory... "Oil leak, but not excessive"
I think this might be a weepy power steering reservoir hose - will investigate. The MOT tester did add "show me a Defender without an oil leak" ![]() |

Fitted a new clutch switch which has cured the revs hanging between gear changes
Space is tight in there so I cut the ring off the old switch which allows you to remove the electrical connector and get a grip on the switch body to rotate it out with grips whilst holding the adapter fitting with a spanner to prevent it from unscrewing from the master cylinder JLR switch ![]() Click image to enlarge Cut the outer ring off the old switch ![]() Click image to enlarge This is what is left and can be turned out with grips ![]() Click image to enlarge > 110 XS Double Cab |
