Anyone know what the two threaded holes in the side of the diff are for or is it another case of "why is there a big hole in the rear chassis cross member"

I think that you'll find that those are fit a bracket to hold a harmonic damper on other models that use the same diff.
Edit - the P38 Range Rover has an harmonic damper fitted here on auto models. See very small ebay picture |

^^^ as black wolf said, P38 hang over.
