^^ Looking at the photo above, I am not even sure that the modified elongated-baseplate D rings would fit with that grille.

I had them on my 300Tdi and had room to spare, but you're right they look a tight fit with an aircon grill.
Re: the Jate rings. While being less exposed, they are under the vehicle and when you're stuck in the mud it's often hard to reach them without doing some digging...😀 Cheers Simon |

It's never simple with our beloved Defenders
![]() Thanks blackwolf for pointing that out. I guess I'll get a pair and try it out, it's not too expensive, and as Simon noted, looks to be a tad neater than digging into mud to fish the jait rings out ![]() The space does look tight though, will see. ![]() Click image to enlarge Will post a picture here if they fit fine, so others who might be interested to fit them to latest Defenders can reference the thread. RRUK, those look tasty, but would be too worried scratching them off-road ![]() MY16 Santorini 90 HT - sold |

Another option that fits on the existing number bolts but doesn't look like it will foul the aircon grill.
Not tried them, so can't be sure... http://www.frogsisland4x4.com/towing_equip/towing_equipTFBRP Cheers Simon |

jk84, I have a pair of the elongated type knocking about somewhere (I think I even know where they are!). I will see if I can dig them out and take a photo this evening to show the proportions of them, then you might be able to determine if that type would do what you want.
Unfortunately I don't have access to an a/c fitted vehicle to offer them up to. |

I'd go for a set of these: http://www.mudstuff.co.uk/recovery-eyes.html
Look subtle, works with air con grille, and easy access. Done. |

^^ They're nice, in many ways they're the 21st Century version of the original D ring.
The only disadvantage I can see is that you have to use a shackle and can't really just tie a rope to them. |

FYI: here is a photo of my old TDi with the D rings fitted. Certainly wont fit with an aircon grill...

They're the standard ones, aren't they, not the elongated ones.

Yes, they're the originals. I didn't mean to suggest they were the elongated ones, it was just for reference.
I recall that I always used shackles when attaching the rope, so I don't think that would be an issue with those MUDstuff ones above. cheers simon |

I can also vouch for XZLs being quite noisy, my BFG mud KM2s that replaced them are quieter.
they are however surprisingly good in mud, very good in the snow but I have to say I disagree with those who have said they are good in the wet- they could actually be a bit 'exciting' in the wet- particularly under braking. The XZLs also seem to have a very stiff sidewall which, (even when I tried various tyre pressures) make for quite a fidgety, lumpy ride! Chris |

Thanks blackwolf, kind of you. Looks like L90Andy have spared you of that one though.
Well spotted, problem solved indeed...just the price is a bit zee german premium ![]()
That's in a nice shade, that 90 is, Simon ![]()
Interesting observations, thanks Chris.Sounds like the XZLs are probably best candidate for an extra set of wheels to put on when off-roading. Or perhaps for skiing trips. Otherwise a set of some shiny alloys with road friendly tyres for normal use - logical excuse to wifey for 'having' to spend more money on the Defender ![]() MY16 Santorini 90 HT - sold |

These are basically a cheaper version of the GMB eyes! |

If you can't reach them without digging then that suggests you should get the shovel out irrespective of whether you have D rings on the bumper or not. Be aware the older D rings had a chassis designed to take the loads. I'm not aware anyone has really designed these Puma versions - the bumper bolts are not actually fastened with a real nut and the final version detailed above makes me cringe - those front two fasteners have no load spreading plate and are attached to a particularly fragile area of the bumper with skimpy set screws. JATE rings - designed for the purpose when form over function is not the primary purchasing criteria. Food for thought: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic43870.html |
