Sealing panels
Had some wet carpeting in the load area left hand side next to the rear swing door next to wheel arch.
Previous owner or somebody backed into the rear and pushed the licence plate light assembly into the body panel about 5-10mm.
Anyway...it pushed it just enough to open a seam between the panel and the stiffener corner piece that the tail and signal lamps attach to. Noticed the gap using a flashlight from the inside in a dark garage.

I'm thinking of pulling the metal out a bit and sealing the seam with silicon from the inside. I thought I read on some other site that silicone is acidic and will attack the aluminum. Is this true? BTW....WTF is this sikaflex that everyone keeps talking about?

I use silicon a lot and did not see any bad effects. Roel

sikaflex can be panted over . but silicone can not


sika also make different types seal and bonding for car, boats, planes

Understood and makes sense..I found sikaflex on a number of websites for construction sealing. Around windows brick, siding and flashing and says it can be painted over. Is this something people use to seal gaps in the defender floor panels...etc?

I think for my application, I can go wth silicone from the inside for now and keep looking for sikaflex.

I use Sikaflex on my Land Rover. I use it for sealing gaps, for wet fixing nuts/bots and any other sealing / adhesive needs.

Having seen silicon peel away when subject to harsh & wet conditions I wouldn't bother. Get Sikaflex and the job is done for good... Thumbs Up

If you choose silicon sealant use NEUTRAL one, not an acidic type. But sikaflex is probably a better solution, it is not silicon based. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I hadn't realised there were different types other than colour variations.

I've used this in the past and have been happy with the results. I was sealing the bulkhead / windscreen frame hence going for the black option.

Ok....I'm living very close to the border of Germany, Netherlands and Belgium.....so far a visit to Gamma and Hornbach(major home stores) have not revealed any sika flex.....is there a specific part number or primary application or something else I should be looking for? Lots of silicone and latex sealers though.

Ive used black 221 and 291 (not sure what the difference is).
