2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Orkney Grey
fuel tank leaking??
I filled my fuel tank up and noticed it was leaking underneath. It may have started prior and I didnt notice as it had been raining. Normally my fuel gauge goes under the full mark at around 150kms and this time it was getting under at 110/120kms.

The leak stops after about 5/10 mins. presumably when the fuel goes down a bit. that said it doesnt look like its a major amount of fuel. enough to blot the floor but not like gushing out.

Was told to check the breather which by the looks of it is all well and secure? the leak seems to be coming from the middle top part of the tank... I'm guessing its a job for the dealership?? or is there anything I can do to check without having to drop tank? I've really only filled twice wherein I've noticed it. Dealer cant take car till 16th so I'll just have to deal witha bit of spillage till then or not fill to full

It will probably be the main filler hose perished where it enters the tank. Sometimes the same hose leaks at the breather connection which can be seen under the filler cap. I think the hose costs about £70. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

yep car is just midway to 3 years old now. lol

i used to always fill past the first click and never had a problem. now even at the first click it leaks lol

I too have filled past the first click many times, brimming the tank to do mpg calculations and never had a leak.

Then just recently it dropped a cupful of fuel on the garage forecourt when I brimmed it. I called my local dealer, who said that I needed to call out Land Rover Assist. They came out and within 2 minutes the guy showed me a little overflow pipe with diesel dripping out of the end of it and asked if I'd filled past the first click. As I had, he said that was the problem and not to do it (it says this in the handbook too).

Doesn't make sense to me as I'd brimmed the tank before without incident. Unless the little overflow pipe was blocked. Does anyone know where the little overflow pipe is connected to? Does it have a rollover valve in it?

Hello milesr3

This is the Tank from my 90, showing the small J Pipe (and Valve) connected to the Breather Pipe.

If the Breather is split, it can leak, onto the Tank with just the movement of fuel within the Tank
soon after filling, even when stopping before the first click at the Pumps.

When my Breather Pipe Split anything beyond 75% Full meant I lost Fuel.

Thanks X4SKP. So the small J pipe is tee'd off the breather pipe that goes back up to the nozzle to allow air out of the tank when filling.

My 'leak' was definately coming out of the J pipe, which makes sense if the fuel level is brimmed and fuel fills the breather and filler pipes. The only mystery is why it didn't leak before.

The best question to ask anyone about anything claimed is 'how do you know that'... Question

So when you say yours is defiantly leaking from the J Pipe, how do you know... Question
(I'm not saying your wrong... Smile )

I have learnt 'on the job' with this one, as I understand it the valve is designed to stop fuel leaking out
in a roll over, but to let air in to equalise the pressure in the tank as the fuel level changes. If some
knows different, I'd be happy to be corrected.

I don't know what exactly is going on with your as if you stop filling the tank on the first click, or later,
there is fuel in the main Filler Pipe. I would imagine that there is also fuel pushed up into the Breather Pipe
at this high level of fill and this situation would require that the J Pipe and Valve not to leak.

You may have a Valve failure, the small diameter piping (J Pipe) is not rubber but a harder (and possibly tougher)
plastic piping, mine showed no signs of deterioration when I dropped the tank.

You are right it is Tee'd into the Breather Pipe, this junction also looked perfect on mine, the short length of Breather Pipe (to the left on my photo above) was where mine had split, exactly where it is forced to expand up and over the 'rib' on the connection pipe fixed to the Tank.

It's the breather pipe mine was rerouted no further leaks. They block a little then it pressurises and floods out. Just check breather pipe is not twisted or blocked.

Because the man from Land Rover Assist reached over the chassis rail, pulled it out and there was diesel dripping out of it.

If the valve in this pipe is supposed to let air in to the tank, then it must be a 1-way valve and therefore has failed if it's letting fuel out.

It's tight to do what the LR Assist guy did but, give it a go and try this yourself, test the valve
or maybe (be brave) just get a new one from Land Rover and refit, at least you will have taken
one 'element' off the potential culprit list.

I ended up cable tieing the j tube up to make the valve as upright as possible.

Tricky to do but has stopped any further leak.
