I've had a Roamerdrive fitted since 2013 which I purchased 2nd hand from a forum member. I do approx 12,000miles a year, I don't know what milage it had covered before me, but i had a bearing start to make itself heard, so I removed the unit and rebuilt it with new bearings which were all avalible from bearing suppliers. I contacted Ray Wood for help etc who said the unit is a 2009 model, he gave me lots of advice with torque settings etc and also to drill an extra hole to improve oil flow which had been introduced on later units.
Overall I am very pleased with the Roverdrive I can cruise at 70 - 80 mph no problem, at 70mph the revs are 2250rpm with the overdrive engauged and 2750 without. 2750rpm with it engauged is 90mph! I have always tended to stay away from using the unit with heavy laden trailers as I don't want to cook the unit, I have Turbo Technics VNT and map to suit. I am glad I went down the overdrive route instead of the 1.2 as I have kept the low 1st gear for pulling off with the caravan of 3.5 tonne trailer on the back. Hope this helps. Sounds good.
If only it wasn’t so expensive l would fit one next week. Until then it’s 65mph for me on the motorway....at least l have cruise control on my TD5, the second best modification you can do and it only costs £120. Less if you make up the wiring harness yourself. |

Ordered one to Ottawa and carried it back to Singapore for a friend before. He seems happy with it with no complains.
the Roamer drive unit will not fit a 1.2 t-box or I would have done it. I have a 1.2 box and I've ran quite a fair bit with it. It would be the best mix for city and highway driving. Again it's all up to how you use the car. Using a stock map, you will have to rev it higher when pulling away on gear 1. I wrote my own map to fix that, so I have a nice pull from standing. Little things like a larger intercooler and an VGT will also help. ![]() |
