I went round in circles on this as I was just rushing.

I used the Exmoor Trim 48 spline boss plus their quick release with a Momo Tuner steering wheel for a Morocco trip as I wanted an extra anti theft provision. Its all down to personal preference but I just couldn't get on with the height of the steering wheel so when I returned home I removed the quick release portion which improved things significantly. The other frustration being that although there is provision for the momo horn button wiring in the quick release part of the boss there is no provision for getting the wiring from the boss to the static part of the steering column. We were advised to run a wire and coil it around the column such that there was sufficient length for it to run lock to lock. We did this and it lasted two weeks before abrading through. I asked for and searched for a slip ring and pencil contact for the Exmoor Trim Boss and Land Rover Column but I could not find one or get an answer on this so in the end I just binned the idea of using the Momo horn push.

And then .......

I saw the Optimil combined boss and quick release (pictured above) in my monthly Land Rover mag and when I saw how slim and neat it was I ordered one immediately. I am really happy with it, quality is great and driving position perfect, the steering wheel position feels to be pretty much as per original. IMHO this is the way to go. You do have to lose the Momo centre horn button though (not enough clearance) and Optimil provide a very nice Optimil branded centre cap. Any farther South and I'll need to trade the Defender in for a Landing Craft Smile

I don't think Dora is a member any more but if you look at the photos you can see that there is nothing machined from the bottom edge just the top to just below the spines. He has taken a bit from the width I think hence the shiny appearance near the bottom before painting.

You have to be careful not to take too much off or the nut wont fit!

Optimil version, which is much more comfortable to use. Excellent quality.

The only criticism I have of it is that the release knobs are self coloured (unlike the one it replaced on which they are black anodised) which means that I spend a lot of time watching their faint reflection in the windscreen. Not a problem, but black would have been better.

I to have just fitted an Optimill boss, lovely bit of kit but those reflections get right on my tits, Optimill don't offer a "Black puller" option....

The reflection issue has been fed back to Optimill, whether anything will come of it I cannot say, but I am told that Optimill is very receptive to feedback.

Perhaps it has not been sunny enough, or I don't look at the clocks enough or maybe the dash is too dirty, however I haven't noticed any reflections on my TDi. Perhaps I'm just lucky Laughing 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

I only tend to notice it under certain lighting conditions, and I think that I have got used to it now anyway because it no longer consciously bothers me.

Let's face it, the cockpit of a Defender is a world of reflections anyway, so what does one extra matter?

I Ordered my boss on the phone and asked about the possibility of a "black puller" option I was told that "they couldn't be black anodised"

Perhaps due to my seating position, the reflections are right in my eyeline, out with the etch primer and satin black I guess... Very Happy

The Startech steering wheel is I beleive effectively a worked on Raid steering wheel.

Raid steering wheels generally use a 74x6 PCD whereas the optimill boss is configured for a more common 70x6 PCD.

There is a company on ebay with a product to convert between the two (see link below) but I have no experience of either the company or the product and similarly no links to them.

Hope this helps. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Nope, which is a pity as a ST wheel on the Optimill boss is the perfect solution as far as I'm concerned.

Has anyone raised the the issue with Optimill? I'm sure if they get enough interest they could easily make a boss to fit the Startech? James

I have fitted mine today, but seem to have misplaced the rubber O ring that I assume keeps the Optimil branded centre cap in place on the quick release boss. I will sort something.

Question: what do people have as a centre cap on the removable steering wheel (I have a Momo Tuner)?
