I struggled for years until I realised the box base wasn't properly seated, its now a 2 minute job.

The bottom half of the box has little legs at each corner which sit in holes in the chassis.

Did this just now.

8 minutes incl cleaning out the bottom of the filter hoohah (with the intake covered from the resultant dust with some foam wrap).

The hassle was getting it back in, had to pull aside that hose and get those angled thingos concurrently.

Laughing I did the very same BMW air filter in the week.
What on earth was someone thinking about when they came up with that great idea?Shocked

I don't think I've ever had so much hassle fitting a simple service item!

Starter motor went on one of our tractors, the replacement the dealer supplied meant we had to take the starter off every time we wanted to change the diesel filters. That starter went back despite the dealer insisting it was the correct part.

That and a long line of their other cockups meant we're now using a different guy for parts and he managed to supply a starter that fitted properly.

Yes I’m inclined to agree with that! Rolling with laughter Anyhow, the last service I told the stealer too change all the trans oils and filters. Being a little suspicious I checked the airfilter that I had marked and guess what, it was still there. I was billed for the element and evan the application of antiseize on the wheel studs that I had applied! Rolling with laughter

The more dealings i have with BMW's the more i realise how poorly designed they are. All those rubber gaskets they use on their engines that perish and leak oil. And the timing chain issues they have with various engines! There's even one now where they put the chain on the back of the engine, so you when the tensioners fall apart you have to remove the gearbox and clutch to replace the chain! Swirl flaps on the 2ltr diesels. Exploding cooling systems. It amuses me when you see BMW enthusiasts saying how terrible the "Peugeot" petrol engine is in the Mini's, yet when you look at the thing it's clearly more BMW design in it than Peugeot! All the bits that failed on my L322 were BMW branded!

Never had a problem with fitting a new one in mine. Haven't got air con if that makes any difference?

4 times I've done mine now and its an absolute pig. Each time is like the first time. Changing the gearbox oil is easier !

I've (re)discovered the trick and think I could do it in 2mins now.

First make sure the new filter is very well seated then it's a combo of inserting the cover on an angle that allows the two tabs to get under their corresponding 'hoops' whilst also being clear of the aircon line. This amounts to:

- Pushing down.
- Pushing in.
- Pulling up.
- Pushing away.

...at the same time Laughing Thumbs Up

I think if the base were installed a bee's dick lower it wouldn't be such a chore, perhaps those that find it easy have the occasional lucky vehicles like this? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Comes off much easier than back on, then then there's not much choice in the matter...

Also, the same could be said for the engineer who designed it's placement Mr. Green Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
