England 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS CSW Zermatt Silver
CV Joint (Puma)
Evening all,

I am looking at replacing my CV joints as one is starting to click so going to do the pair.

I have searched this forum which threw up that the Pumas come with the shaft as a complete unit, but have also seen some people showing pics of them replacing just the joint and can’t seem to get a definite answer.

I have a 2008 2.4 110, my question is Do I have to buy a CV joint with half shaft attached or can you replace just the CV joint on to old shafts.

If anyone knows can someone also give me a part number.

TIA

You can replace either shaft or cv independently. Sorry don't have mpn to hand. Cheers

Not on a Puma you can’t, the CV joint and Shaft are one piece, so you have to replace the whole lot.

The Puma cv joint / shafts are slightly stronger than the pre Puma ones so you would be downgrading if you fitted the earlier Td5 / 300tdi front shafts with removable cv joints.

So...

- How do you remove the shaft from the knackered Cv as they have a square section snap ring instead of the wire snap ring pre 2007?

- once you have removed the square section snap ring shaft which is designed not to be removed from the cv joint, which cv joint do you replace it with as they aren’t available separately for the Puma, and pre 2007 ones don’t fit as the Puma shaft uses roll formed larger diameter splines as opposed to the pre 2007 cut splines.

Well done for linking to the 300tdi workshop manual not the Puma one.

And also for showing a pre Puma snap ring which isn’t present on the Puma shaft.

OK then look at pages 146 and 147 07 puma work shop manual But you will find that i has been pasted and copy form the Tdi 300 work shop manual

Good luck

That will be the Puma workshop manual that shows a Salisbury rear axle along with other parts cut and pasted from earlier manuals.

As someone who has worked extensively on the Puma for the past thirteen years including rebuilding three of them from the ground up instead of reading the manuals online. Clearly Dorsetsmith you have not as you wouldn’t be posting pictures of a pre Puma wire snap ring for a start. And you haven’t provided a part number for the non existent separate Puma cv joint without shaft.

I think I have two Puma Cv/shafts in my skip still I may smash apart to prove it.

So seems like this maybe just another thread without a definitive answer!

Dorsetsmith, what CV joints have you purchased and used in the past. and do they come with the ring? I’ve never done it before but I’m pretty certain this can be done. After all we are talking about a defender whose design hasn’t changed in 30 years.

Oldowner, what makes you so adamant that it can’t be done when Dorsetsmith has said he’s already done it? What part do you think is not doable? Not having a dig just curious?

Thank you both for your help.

I have a pair of original Puma front shafts/CVs which I took out to replace with Ashcroft HD items. If I can find them I'll see if they can be split in the traditional way - it was my understanding that they can but I haven't bothered to try before.
