Bench testing MAF
Is it possible to bench test a MAF? i.e set the multimeter to x setting and check reading across pin x?

My fuel economy is down to around 21mpg. Ok granted, I do short trips to work each morning of around 6 miles and the heater is only just getting warm.
But I did do a 30mile each way trip the other day and I did not get what I was expecting to 1/4 of a tank (normally around 100miles, this time it was around 75ish.

Having no diagnostic gear makes life a little harder. 1999 Defender TD5 110

PM Pete from Bell Auto Services he has tested and even did a trial whereupon he provided certain forum members new ones for their old. If it can be tested he will know expected readings and how to obtain them.

Found it

So, I assume I leave the plug connected but find a method of connecting the meter from Pin2 to ground? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Well after sticking a bit of wire into the pin 2 and putting the plug back on, I checked the voltage and I thought I was getting 2v, but after doing two more tests, I was getting Mv readings! 1999 Defender TD5 110

Replace I think. While at BAS HQ I had the MAF on already tested and purchased two more from the forum.
One was dead so that got binned. The left over one, was put on as it was reading slightly higher but not as high as it should be. (thats the one on now)
So I think its time for a new one.

Seen a few knocking around on Ebay etc for around £40 ish. But I think I am leaning towards one from LR/BAS etc.
A mate works in a motor factors so can get them but the make is one I have not heard of! 1999 Defender TD5 110

Give Pete a tinkle or drop him a 'pm.' With all the testing he's done on them he'll know which one comes out on top. In the interim whip it out and if it looks bad try a clean and retake your readings perhaps? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I do have a look at the MAF, it did look OK but looks can be deceiving.
A clean might be an option, I only have brake cleaner so some electrical contract cleaner would be better.

Re-testing might also be worth while. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Brake cleaner will be ok. Give it a rinse in white spirits after and let it dry a while. Worth a shot on a Sunday when everything is shut.

May be worth a look....

Thanks K9F. I will give the MAP and AAP a clean as well. Another thought is to clean out the intercooler.(but does not effect the MAF as far I can tell) 1999 Defender TD5 110
