My Grandad fought in Italy and was shot and wounded and came home to recover, he returned to Italy and was present at the downfall of Mussolini . He had a lot of photos of those events which my uncle now has.
As a child I never heard him speak about the war but when I joined the forces he started to tell me stories and show me the photos. Very proud of him and all his comrades. |

We have much to be thankful for... very good to see a few of those who were actually there,
I remain very proud of our armed services, who continue to stand on our front line. ![]() https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Like Borderterrier, I am very proud to of served, I left 3 yrs ago.
But I have also stood on those beaches, when you realise where they landed and the open area they had to cross under fire and then see the cliffs they scaled you understand the sheer courage of everyman who landed on those beaches. Everyman that landed there is a REAL hero. Some people today don't understand the real meaning of the word and use it far to frequently. 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |

I also feel humble and proud of those men who took part in the landings. My father was one but he didn't seem to think it was anymore dangerous than the rest of the war. Now it has become iconic . My father was probably unique in the story he told of his experience just before setting off. He was in Southampton ready to board on 5jne44 when he was called into the officers office where a senior officer from London told him that as the eldest son of a Dutchman he had just been called up for the German army. He was asked to volunteer to still go and had to sign to that effect. As if in a scene from Dad's army he asked what will happen if I get captured? Oh don't worry about that the officer said they'll probably shoot you! He always made light of this incident even though it all sounded a bit dangerous to me, especially as he lost his best mate before they could clear the beach.
So today moves me greatly and I have the utmost respect for those who served then and now. Merlin |
