Mileage!
What constitutes "high mileage"?
And how high can the mileage go on these lumps before major heart surgery is required?

Generally, similar to the Tdi in terms of average - 250k+ but there are a lot of anomalies surrounding cracked heads. I cannot see any trends in why the heads sometimes go, but frankly whilst publicised a lot, they are still a small minority, and most people report no problems at all. Some that have had poor maintenance and servicing keep on going, while some that have had regular and pristine servicing have caused problems.

My TD5, I used and abused quite a bit, including a couple of random overheating near misses, and one drowning, and it just kept on going without major or even minor interruptions.

If you buy one, you can expect it to be generally trouble free for that kind of mileage. If it isn't bad luck, and it really is just bad luck. 1998 110 300Tdi White Hard Top

160k plus on mine Ozzy, no real issues just fuel pressure regulator and a couple of sets of injector washers and seals, the set I put in have lasted longer than the ones the so called specialist Independant put in at an exhorbitant price.

126 k on mine, and still going well.
Did the injector loom and FPR at about 80k.
I do the oil and all filters annually, it's decat and EGR free.
It seems to have built a reputation for longevity , generally.

With today’s materials technology and assembly by robots with components matched for tolerance, with regular oil changes there’s absolutely no reason why a modern engine should EVER need “major heart surgery”; assuming, of course, parts are even available.

I sold my LHD 2001 TD5 after ten years with 150,000 on the clock, it’s still going strong being used to tow classic cars all over Europe, so I shudder to think what the mileage is now!

Engine-wise the water pump has been replaced, and the oily loom changed as a prevention rather than an actual fault.

If my current one gives half as good service I’ll be more than satisfied.

My td5 Disco is currently on 208000, emissions were well within the limits at the last MoT. I know the head gasket was done at approx 120000 due to the plastic dowels, it's on it's third FPR and has had a new water pump and camcover gasket / injector harness. The EGR fell off soon after I got it.
I generally average 50 - 60 mph and it returns just over 30 mpg.

Mines nearly 10 years old and today passed 224,000 miles.

New gearbox (notchy), transfer box (leaky) and diffs (howling) & radiator (leaking) at 130k.

New VNT turbo at 160k, with remap from IRB Developments. Lovely Bow down

New intercooler (JE Engineering one split and playing the trombone), clutch and dual mass flywheel (noisy) at 210k.

I replace the injector loom every couple of years as a precaution and I've recently fitted a new fuel pressure regulator.

And I put fuel in it. Lots and lots of fuel Big Cry Dave
