I used silentcoat on mine (same principal as dynamat and almost identical construction). The description of where I applied it etc are on my TR51 thread ( http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic12967-15.html ).

Results:
Engine on, stationary Reduction : 8db
30mph in 3rd Reduction : 14db
50mph in 5th Reduction : 9db
70mph in 5th Reduction : 5db

I didn't do the engine bay, roof or wheel arches so if these rant exposed better results may be forthcoming Thumbs Up
Hope it helps.

Dynamat alone will not make it a lot quieter. Dynamat is to stop vibrations, so drumming noises like from the big flat roof should be deadened. If you want noise reduction I suggest dynamat then a decent thickness of closed cell foam over the top and it makes a big difference, but the whole interior needs doing (and I mean everywhere) to make the biggest difference.

roughly what does it cost to do a full TD5 90 ? Defender 90 TD5 County -
You need only two tools in life: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesnt move and it should: WD-40.
If it moves and shouldnt: duct tape it.

That's impressive, I hope mine will be close to that then when I get around to taking out the interior and starting again. I will do a before and after test for people.

Has anyone used the dynamat tape to seal the joints up? 2004 TD5 Defender 90 xs station wagon

Not sure I agree. I've Noisekillered some of it and Dynamatted other bits over a period of time and driving before and after fitting Dynamat definitely made a difference to the level of noise. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop
Now a 2013 110 USW too.

That will be due to the reduction in drumming noise, as well as a slight barrier to other noise.

But it isn't a noise barrier in itself. Other than the fact it is something else to travel through.

You need an anti-drumming layer (eg dynamat, silentcoat), followed by a thin layer of closed cell foam, followed by mass loaded vinyl - this is very dense and is a proper sound barrier

Well I don't know the technicalities.

Just Dynamat less noise makes. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop

As Diablo says you need a layered approach to stop different kinds and frequencys of noise for the best effect. Basically dynamat stops the car making its own noise (vibrations/drumming) with a slight reduction from other noise due to extra mass but is not in itself a noise barrier, so external noise will still be heard. Without going over the top and not being able to refit trim etc, a coat of dynamat (or similar) and say 6 to 10 mm thick closed cell foam (so it doesn't absorb water) is the best and most cost effective way to make a big difference in noise and as a bonus cuts down on condensation during winter months Thumbs Up
