If you were to remove the ECU you would find the numbers on a sticker at the back that Diesel Jim mentions.

You can't see it in situ.

Thanks! I will take it out tomorrow.

If the engine light is coming on there should be a code.

Yes you are right guys. I took out the ECU today and the number is NNN500020.

Running some checks, I noticed that the fuel filter and its bracket became very hot. The engine was running for around 15 minutes at idling speed and I guess the temperature of the filter was 60-70 Centigrades (very hot to touch with your hands). The coolant gauge was just starting to move.

It was the two pipes going forward that became hot. The two pipes aiming rearwards were cold.

Is this normal behavior?

Yes it is and 70c is about right.

The fuel circulates through galleries in the cylinder head and so picks up heat that way. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop

Have you checked your crank sensor? How quick does it restart? What is exhaust doing during running? Smoke? All norm? What's exhaust doing restart, or not restarting?

Thanks for the fuel diagram. But I am not sure that I know how it works. Other than the fuel gets hot and is supposed to. Everything was much easier on my old MG TD Crying or Very sad

I have not checked the crank sensor yet. What am I supposed to look for?

After the engine light comes on and it stops it will not start again but cranks fine. I have to switch off and wait for a minute or two so that the glow plug light comes on. Then it will start fine.

If I switch off when it is running normally I do not have to wait for the glow plug light. It will start immediately.

I have not noticed anything unusual with the exhaust at any time. So I have not paid any attention to it.

This sounds very much like a problem we had at work on a Mondeo diesel.
Now i,m no diesel expert and a mondeo and a Td5 are probably very different beasts but i will carry on anyway at the risk of getting shot down in flames by someone with far more knowledge than me.
Said mondeo showed very similar symptoms to the OP,s defender,it would drive o.k until you put it under some load i.e going up an incline with quite a wide throttle opening then it would just stop as if you had switched off the "ignition"
To cut a long story short it turned out to be worn injectors allowing to much fuel to return to the tank resulting in low fuel pressure in the rail but enough to let the engine run. When the engine demanded a lot of fuel the fuel pressure dropped below a pre determined limit (i think about 960 bar) in the rail and the ECU shuts the engine down as it thinks there is a fuel leak. After leaving the car for a few minutes the car would restart with a short amount of cranking and continue until the next large demand for fuel.
We had the injectors rebuilt by a local diesel specialist and the car is now fine. 2005 Td5 90 XS

If you look at my video you may notice that when the rpm is dropping down the Engine get a small "hick-up" at 900 rpm just before reaching idling speed.

It is something that I did not notice before these problems started. Do you think it is relevant?

When you take your foot off the gas the ECU will stop fuel being injected (this is all to do with emissions) until the revs approach tickover and will then will start to inject fuel to prevent a stall. At least thats my understanding of it. 2005 Td5 90 XS
