Help! Engine cuts out at full throttle
Today when I took the car home the engine stopped as soon as I engage 3rd (or higher) gear. It took some time to discover that the engine worked fine in 1st and 2nd gear.

It took a considerable time to get home...

Have you got any idea what has happend and how to fix it? I have had the Defender (2004/TD5) only a few months and I am not that familiar with the vehicle.

Regards,

Hans

Any more info?

Died quickly, engine started ok after, can you start it in third, lack of power in other gears, no warning lights?

First thought is wiring loom that goes across gearbox rubbed through, and being pulled.

The vehicle was parked for a week. Never given any trouble before. The first part of the road I only used 1st and 2nd gear as it was a small forest road. No performance problem. After maybe 5 minutes I engaged 3rd gear and the engine died after maybe 10 seconds.

Started fine but again the same thing happened. This went on for a while before I realised that it kept on running in 2nd gear. No performance problem. During my 80 km ride the engine died a couple of times also in 2nd gear but started again almost immediately.

To me it felt like it went in to some "limp home" mode. Never tried to start in 3rd gear so I dont know. No warning lights as long as the engine was running.

Regards,

Hans

I would advise trying it in low range, to make sure it is gear related, and not that more fuel is required as you build up speed.

The gearbox, is a mechanical item, so I can't understand why your problem would be caused by gear change. As I mentioned above, the wiring can rub through near the gearbox, and this could be being pulled as the torque moves the box.

I would be tempted to change air and fuel filter, as a precaution. I assume you have no test kit, such as a Nanocom.

Thanks Andy for your advise. I will try some tests tomorrow. However, I do not think it is fuel related as it runs fine at 2500 rpm (in second). Furthermore, all filters were changed only a few months ago.

Could it have something to do with the immobiliser system?

Hans

If it was the immobiliser then I would think this to show via the red flashing led in the instrument cluster, and not restart without more input being required.

Can't think of anything else even the gear stick has no external parts (apart from the bit you see) so it can't be pulling, or touching anything.

Strange, will sleep on it and let you know if I have any further thoughts

Morning Andy,

Today I tested the Defender again. And it seems that when I depress the throttle fully, the Engine dies. Regardless in which gear. So you can forget what I said yesterday about 1st and 2nd only. So to me it seems that it is a fuel supply problem. But how comes that it still works in 2nd gear at 2500 rpm? It only dies when I suddenly fully depress the throttle.

Any ideas what to do next?

Regards,

Hans

I don't really know as i am very new to this, but later defenders have a three stage throttle sensor (I think), i would guess that one of the wires has come off the sensor, or the sensor has failed, so when the throttle hits its 3rd spectrum, the ECU is getting an incorrect reading, but don't take this as any form of definite info like i say, i am very new to Defenders Big Cry

The TPS uses all three tracks regardless of what gear/speed you're in.

If it is the TPS there should be faults logged in the ECU. If sufficient faults are logged, the engine will enter limp mode and the MIL will illuminated. Cycling the ingnition will clear the limp mode/MIL but the logged faults remain.

You really need access to a diagnostic tool.

Alternatively as its a Defender replace the TPS and see if the problem goes away (it's easy on a Defender).

I had a TPS fail on my Disco2 with some years ago. Not an expensive part (£60 or so, IIRC) but on the Disco a pig to fit due to the inaccessibility of the fasteners - you need microscopic hands and long thin arms with a couple of extra joint in each! Defender is easy by comparison.

If it is the tps it will show the problem in all gears at the same throttle position. Is this the case? Or is it more that it cuts out when extra fuel is required?

If your tps is faulty it will show the engine warning light, and the engine will go to tick over only, no ability to rev. The engine warning light will reset every time you turn your ignition off then on.

At least this makes more sense than being gearbox based problem.

Can you hear your fuel pump running in the tank?

Made some more tests today.

- Drained some fuel from the fuel filter - no water, no impurties. looked good to me.

- Removed the red contact from the ECU - no oil as far as I could see.

- Tried to run it in low gear - same problem as in high.

- Tried it in neutral with sudden full throttle - engine light comes on direct and the engine dies.

- Still in neutral with slow throttle increase - Engine light comes on at around 3000 rpm and engine dies.

- Tried to locate the TPS - could not find it. Where is it located?

I have not checked if the fuel pump is running in the tank as I took it for granted as the engine runs.

Sometimes I have to wait several minutes before I can restart the engine.

Any more thoughts? Sorry about this guys...

Best regards,

Hans

Have you checked the relays under the drivers seat are located OK ?

One is for the fuel pump and it could be coming loose with vibration.

Easy to check.

Bob,

I was fiddling with these relays (two yellow and one black) under the passenger seat (LHD...) when I checked the ECU contact for oil. Will check more careful tomorrow. But would the Engine run at all if the relay is faulty?

Best regards,

Hans
