Can a battery back up sounder be added to a 90 xs 05plate ? Is it a plug and play item?

In 99% of cases the wiring is already in the wing loom.... so yes plug and play. Although I would actually put it in a none standard location.
The only other thing you need to do is change the settings on the 10AS unit with suitable diagnostic equipment. The backup battery sounder is basically a horn/siren powered by a rechargeable battery that is constantly re-charged. The siren is set off by either a signal from the alarm unit or when the power supply is disconnected. I have fitted a 3 rd party battery powered sounder to a permenant , fused, live supply from the battery. So, if the alarm unit is triggered then the normal alarm sounds. If the battery is disconnected then the backup sounder is triggered.
In fact I have 2 Sounders fitted under the bonnet and elsewhere. They can be disabled with a special key, if you know where the units are. It all helps. LANDYWATCH Neighbourhood Watch for Land Rover Owners http://www.landywatch.co.uk/smf2/index.php |

I too have read up extensively on the site about upgrading the alarm. My insurer had asked for evidence that my 2007 Defender LR fitted alarm was Cat2. (I can't seem to find this). After having read numerous responses about alarms I have gone for a new alarm system which includes the Blackjax anti hijack, warn away and anti tilt as extras to the base unit.
It is a Clifford G5 650 MK2 alarm which will be fitted in a few days. If you PM me, I will give you the full spec, prices and details of the company fitting it as I also wanted full certification for the insurer and back up. The prices on places like eBay are just for the base spec's with no extra's. 2007 Defender 90 XS |

In this Thatcham doc (page 26) you can see all Defenders from 2007 onwards are rated Cat 2 (which means immobiliser only) The Defender alarm is not certified as even though battery back-up is now standard LR haven't put it forward for certification. http://www.thatcham.org/files/pdf/compliance.pdf |

It is the fitment of a complete new alarm in conjunction with the OE immobiliser, most insurance companies should be happy with CAT 2. We can do a cheaper version where you have an additional key fob instead of the all in one key. We could supply for DIY fit but there is no insurance certification with this option. As has been said the LR battery backed up siren is the cheapest and easiest upgrade. Cat 2 > 1 upgrade is a days work |

aha,
thanks - that makes far more sense - a complete new alarm. does a thatcham 1 car (defender) become almost impossible / practica to steal? clearly this excludes having your keys / fob nicked and having the car lifted. |
