do you use your clutch....?
so before you all bury your heads in your hands .....I'm not just about to moan about anything.

well so long as I can hurry up and write this before the urge to overwhelms me. Very Happy

just wondering - when I start the car sometimes the engine seems lively and eager to start up (as I would expect with a modern unit). this isn't always the case and I'd foolishly thought the reason its doesn't always seem eager to spin up might be related to the shoe dragging on the drum brake (clearly this cant' be the case).

so to the clutch. who depresses the clutch when starting the car Embarassed cough plutter .... you see the chap next door has an identical motor to mine and HE depresses the clutch - that led me to wonder if maybe thats a problem due to the clutch being connected to the ecu which I understand reduces torq etc.

so is HE a muppet depressing the clutch when starting up or does it not matter. I've always done this on other cars. clearly I wouldn't dream of doing it on this one. do I need to go and have a word with him?

Whistle

Depressing the clutch reduces the load on the engine (gearbox drag).

Can't say off the top of my head if I do or don't, I probably do Confused  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

thats exactly why I depress the clutch when starting - to reduce load etc.

just wondering tho if on the defender if it makes a difference having the clutch switch?

I doubt there's a different starting strategy depending on whether the clutch is depressed or not Confused  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I would need to check, but I think I read in the manual that it's to reduce the stress on the starter motor. And yes, I always depress it when starting.

The book says depress the clutch so yes, I depress it.

I had an RG500 that I couldn't get started at all, tried and tried but the engine wouldn't turn over (kick start). The shop owner came out and started it first kick, no issues at all. Turned out I was pulling in the clutch which disengaged the kick start, shop owner left it out and it started. Embarassed

I'm sure one of the cars I had previously suggested you shouldn't.....I still did.

presumably the ecu / clutch switchy thing doesn't come into play when starting the engine - or at least it makes no difference?

I always depress the clutch when starting or stopping the engine, force of habit.

I also always leave cars in gear. In a peculiarly old-fashioned way I also point the wheels at the kerb when parking on a hill, like we used to be taught to do back in the, er, seventies, when I took my test!

I always put the clutch in....more for safety than anything.

good habit to get into.

Helps when other car (a BMW) wont start untill clutch is in

Now BMW know a thing or two about engines..so it cant be a bad thing
