Hi DG123 is there any chance that the bolts when fitted on the seat box are allowing water through although it does sound like you are getting a lot of water in but then the seat box is above the rear wheel so has plenty of momentum, also are both the side window and rear side window seals all good, sounds like a good dowsing with a hose with you inside should hopefully get to the bottom of this, hope you find the leak Thumbs Up Paul

Tried to get to the bottom of a pretty major leak in the back of the 110. Passengers are not happy with the smell of rotting carpets and were not looking forward to a long trip we’ve planned for 1/2 term next week.

I took the offending carpet out together with fold up seat and all the trim in passenger side rear.

I thought the source of the leak would be pretty obvious given the sheer amount of water around but unfortunately this wasn’t the case. Carpet on top of wheel arch and almost 1/2 of boot floor carpet are soaked. Carpet on top of wheel arch was wettest where I’ve circled in red below.

I thought the foam strip sealing the tub was the likely candidate as it’s not particularly level, but this joint seems bone dry on the inside

Any ideas? I’ll have to sit inside next time it rains. I can’t face putting it back together with no solution.

To make matters worse, I managed to shear off the stud on the dickie seat. A case of too much haste Rolling Eyes

Hopefully there’s enough length left to get a nut on. Otherwise I’ll have to grind it off and weld on a new bolt Confused

On mine the bolts holding the tub on that when tighten compress the foam strip were loose. One was totally missing in the middle. Maybe torque them down a bit.

I would get a pressure washer or hose pipe on the outside of it whilst someone sits inside. I went over all of my seams with Tiger Seal including running it down the foam strips you mentioned.

Have a look around where the rear lights, indicators bolt through.

^^^ Use an assistant with a hose pipe, it is just about the only way to find leaks like this. I wouldn't use a pressure washer since this is likely for force water in in places that don't actually leak in rain (I tend to use a hose with one of those sprinkler nozzles for watering plants to mimic heavy rain).

Cheers blackwolf and boxoftricks. I’ll get the hose out later when my willing assistant returns from school Very Happy
Might just run sealant down the foam strip anyway as it does look the most likely candidate. 2012 110 XS SW Orkney Grey

Hi barneyboy, I checked the bolts and they seemed OK.

I’m not sure whether the water’s coming in through the wheel arch whilst driving or just leaking from rain. The water does look pretty clean though, so I suspect rain and we have had an awful lot lately.

Bizarrely, just prior to this the main leak was in the passenger footwell and I’ve just had a new front door seal delivered to try and fix that one. Like many things with the Defender the footwell leak was frustratingly intermittent - went for months dry as a bone and just when you thought it was sorted it’d be back with a deluge Banging Head

Had the rear electrical wiring re-done & upgraded (long overdue): they ripped out the old wiring which ran undernead the drawer system, and re-routed it outside on top of the chassis.

Also added a new rear-view camera & mirror and new Bosch AeroTwin wiper blades (highly recommend these @ R315 a pair).

It cost a pretty packet, but as usual, top job by Mette's Auto Electrical!

Just do a few jobs on it, get it MOT’d.

My keep it as a work horse whilst I do my house up but seems a shame to ruin a 200tdi D1 as they’re a bit scarce now. Engine is super sweet as is gearbox. Done 120k and last owner 15 years.

Like that AJC. I have a bit of a soft spot for the discovery having had a K plate 200tdi as a bit of a green lane toy about 12 years ago. Was pretty much unstoppable out of the box. Shame the ones in my price range now are all snotters.

Still haven't got the 110 back so had to do an ikea run in the courtesy disco sport. Doesn't matter you drive there it's never a pleasant experience Mad 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone

My 90 passed it’s MOT with a clean sweep Friday.
Glad that is over, as I can get on with other jobs now.
Seems only like yesterday I had the last.
