Ah, got it.
I had the naïve idea that aluminium body was not a conductor but google tells me it is. What a numpty!

I had the same issue and the relief was great when good ol WD40 solved it ... BUT, I continued to repeat the process of running the wipers (pulled away from screen) and squirting liberally for a few ...
