Update 2
I just called a guy on Ebay who had the part listed and he said it will not fit the Defender Tdci engine.
It fits TDci engines up to 2006 - not after.

Honestly I do not think they guy is right. Can you measure geometry of the elbow. That enables me to select an O-Ring:

Edit: I stongly recommend buying a Neodym-Magnet (or more) and place it inside the sump. Much better than a single magnetic drain plug.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I have a couple of questions:

1. Does the oil pick up have a mesh to stop stuff other than oil entering the oil pump?
2. If a fragment got into the oil filter should it not be captured and therefore safe?
3. Once in the sump - the only place it could end up is the oil pump - if No1 is a no?

If No 1 is a no - and the fragment could be picked up - and seize the oil pump - and snap a chain, then I can completely understand why sump removal is a must

However if the oil pick up has a mesh then what other possibilities does a fragment have of getting back in once gravity has taken its effect?

Yes, there is a "sieve" in the suction pipe. But the particle shape and size is decisive for whether it can be sucked in. Take a needle, for example. It can be sucked in vertically, but not in a horizontally oriented state.

But if it is not removed, this is a latent source of danger, because it is moving. That's why I recommend magnets inside the sump. You want to ensure a clean system.

Thanks hornet. Sump off it is then. I think I will drain the oil and see what is on the sump plug and then piece together everything I have to establish what is missing.
I have located all 15 pin bearings luckily as these did not drop into the sump and stayed in the top of engine.
I think there is one or 2 tiny pieces still un-accounted for though.

Thanks for your advise.

Great Thumbs Up

And could you please measure the "elbow", groove width and depth? I will select the O-Ringsize + material for coolingwater.

Dear All

Just a note to say Thank You for all your advice. I have re-built the engine and it is up and running again and sounds like new.
I re-used the water elbow seal in the end - but replaced the seal on the timing chain cover.

All is good so far.

So from me and my Lady - Thank You!
