300tdi bent push rod
So….. driving down the road and then sudden loss of power, white smoke and sounded like a bag of nails. Pulled over and nothing obvious so got recovered home.

My first thought was head gasket but looking at it in the morning it seemed to be relating to no3 cylinder, lots of diesel in the exhaust. Stripped the rocker cover off and the cone shaped adjuster screw had sheared off on the rocker took the rocker shaft off and the push rod was bent, all others look fine.

As the valve was not operating properly that would seem to account for the symptoms but does anyone have any ideas as to what could have caused just a single push rod to fail and bend?

Thanks

Simon

Yes that’s what I thought that first but it was only one push rod and when engine running all other valves were moving fine. It’s a bit of a mystery.

Stripped the head off it this week and the garage reported gasket is fine and no valve to piston contact. Head and block look good.

Thank you for the suggestions..... By way of an update... the head went off for a service and valves on N0.3 cylinder were showing some witness marks against the guides and most likely sticking.

New pushrods fitted and new guides and all valves cleaned and ground. Back together and running nicely again so fingers crossed that has it sorted.
