The Discovery had smaller tyres and thus a smaller diameter. The higher transfer gearing compensated for this.

Thank you all for the latest information.
I am beginning to think I should keep my transfer box standard and experiment with different tyre sizes. Does anybody know what size tyres a new Discovery 300tdi had fitted from the factory? |

Give Shabs @ Syncro Gearboxes a call.
I've just had a rebuilt box from him with the higher 5th in my 110 300TDi can't say much at the moment as its only been in a week. Also had the slick shift and that is great. So far it does seem much better cruising on the A50 although as already mentioned you need to be running faster before changing up to 5th from 4th due to the increase. Tyres are currently Copper STT 265/75 R16 but I also have a set of General Grabber 235/85 R16 but not had these on. I also have a full width Alisport intercooler but I need to check the fuel pump tuning as I think it currently is stoke after a new pump was fitted and I forgot to adjust it. |

MJN110 did you ever get round to fitting the 1.2 transfer box to your 300tdi 90? Looking at doing this myself to a completely standard 1997 300tdi. Cheers |

I'm following with interest as my 300tdi 90 will need a new gearbox soon as the syncro 1st to 2nd is troublesome again and 5th is noisy.
My current plan is to fit an Ashcroft R380 standard gearbox but with the HD rear support bearings and a new Ashcroft 1.2 gear ratio transfer box with sleaved casing, oem intermediate shaft & rear output shaft later this year. Since having a complete restoration & rebuild a few years ago to include an Allisport full size intercooler, steg supplies boost pin, timing spacer kit plus some other tweaks I find I can sit in 5th way more. I don't tow or drive much offroad these days, my nearest motorway in 150+ miles away, it's on a 2" lift and has 265/75/16 tyres. My 90 is used primarily to explore the Highlands & Islands which it's great at. The current original transfer box is likely totally fine, but for me I think the 1.2 ratio will work better for me touring with the extra performance my 90 has.
