I take your point about pulling the wheel straight - this is why I am resorting to a puller.

I am only pulling the wheel off to deal with a problem in the switch housing between the wheel & the dash. Something has come adrift in there so that the wheel is fouling something when turning left.

It's not anything serious or urgent, but I do want to check it out - so I will be keeping the wheel.

That said, A nice Momo or Mota Lita would go down well. Very Happy

I love my Mona-lita wheel. Such a nice feel and classic look. Still looks great after a decade. Just saddle soap the cover from time to time to refresh its supple feel.

My father never kept the nut on when removing steering wheels from his Land Rovers and it never did him any harm.

Well, this job, though not urgent, was one of the most frustrating I have experienced. None of the usual ways of getting the steering wheel off made the slightest impression. No amount of pulling, banging etc.

Finally I bit the bullet & purchased the above puller, which did the trick very easily.

The wheel is a B type wheel, & is 36 spline. The puller works on the 2 threaded holes visible when you take off the padded centre piece. The threads are 1/4 inch UNF, BTW.

Even though these are a fairly late type of wheel, they are not M6, which one would expect.

My problem was caused by the clamp bolt for the switchgear coming loose - easily fixed AFTER you get the wheel off!!

Sorry to resurrect a post.

I have a 48 spline wheel off and a 48 spline boss to go on, however, can I for the life of me get it to fit? Absolutely not!

Is it usually very tight getting a new boss on?

does the your original wheel feel tight to fit? you may have been given the wrong boss size or the indicator pins are out too far. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Is it an Optimill boss, by any chance? I ask because there's at least one case on here where somebody had one that was faulty and wouldn't fit. It was swapped for another, which was then fine.

The splines are tapered so all wheels and bosses should be an easy fit. Darren

Shouldn't be tight - it has to be 'snug' (no play between splines and wheel) but should slide on ok.

the cheap removeable bosses have been known to fail.

It was just a cheapy definitely not optamil, a stopgap solution to a wheel that keeps growing mould.
