TC light only on - diagnosis help rqd

Hello all, I’ve also posted this in my defender but as this is a specific issue, I thought I’d ask in this section if anyone has had and resolved the problem.

TC light has been on since I bought the Defner, doesn’t affect the way it drives but as its out of MOT, it will prevent me getting a new MOT.

Took the front left wheel off today to investigate the TC light issue. Removed the abs sensor, cleaned it up a little and then refitted. It was clean enough a quick wipe over was sufficient but no change to the TC light status. So, checked the wiring condition and the plug where it joins on the wing and again, all good.

Plugged in the new code reader (icarsoft 3) to read any values in the abs module and noticed the message about the LF Inlet valve being short to ground. It showed a value of 3.29V in the inlet only compared to the outlet and the RH inlet and outlet which all showed 0.07V. Unplugging the harness from the ABS block resulted in all values changing to 3.29V.

So, could anyone guess if it’s the sensor or valve block itself? Suggestions of things to check welcome!

Can you swap the sensors over between the front wheels.i.e move the left to right and right to left. That way you can check if it’s a sensor issue as the fault will move to the other wheel if it’s the sensor.

Alternatively if you have a multimeter you can disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance the good one will give you the correct resistance value, then test the potential faulty one and compare.

If you have a scopemeter you can spin the wheel by hand and check the signal from the sensor for waveform and amplitude.

I don’t have a scope meter but I do have a multimeter. The drivers side (thought to be good) measure .859 k ohm and the passenger side .858 k ohm.
Not having a reference point to indicate if the numbers are good or bad, it only shows that both abs sensors are good or bad. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

The fault is showing it is the valve rather than the sensor, and the latter inputs to the ECU/Modulator which provides an output to the former.

Obviously it could be your ABS modulator, BUT I’d expect that fault to show the 3 amigos - TC, ABS and Brake warning lights. So fingers crossed it’s not that.

It ‘could’ possibly be the shuttle valve - which you could replace with the ABS modulator in situ.

I’ve been chasing faults around the ABS for some time

and others have said it’s important to verify whether it’s the sensors at this stage.

Thanks Screbble, I was just reading your thread earlier, hope it’s getting closing to resolution?
I’ve ordered a sensor as they are cheap enough to try and if not, I’ve got a spare for when one inevitably goes. I’ll have a look at the shuttle valve fix next. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

hmm, sounds like I’m about 100k ohm under spec although mine is a TD5 and the thread is Puma, not sure if they changed at all?

I’m sure I got it all the way home when I refitted the passenger side but worth double checking just in case it is that simple!

I’ll also find and pull the ABS fuse, see if I can get all three amigos to appear. 2003 110 G4 used in 03 and 06 events - its well travelled.

I’m getting closer…

I replaced all four ABS sensors as they are relatively inexpensive and relatively easy to replace.
I replaced the ABS shuttle valve in situ which was a pain in the proverbial.
I then replaced the ABS modulator unit.

I’ve manually bled the system and am at the ‘Nanocom’ stage I think.

The 3 amigos have left the building.

It looked like the brake fluid reservoir bushes/grommets had failed but I’m not so sure now.

I hope to be back on the road soon. 👍
