Used a strong neodymium magnet (have several to modify drain plugs for diffs etc) through the opening for the lower hinge when I dropped a nut plate on mine.
Be careful when installing the nut plates. Mine were a bit hard to slide, and managed to get the screwdriver I was pushing them with to slip and gouge the paintwork Banging Head 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I live rurally, and don’t have a flexible magnet pickup; I have not seen one before. I only have a telescoping type which didn’t fit into the panel. I also tried my flexible claw pickup but that was no use. I’ll go to eBay and look for a flexible magnet pickup now actually, it sounds like a good piece of gear.

So I thought I’d concentrate on the mid doors. 🤬 Even worse, the right lower hinge nuts (? a welded nut bar?) has fallen into the centre door pillar, and I’m stuffed if I can see anywhere to access the back of the pillar to retrieve or fit new units. It won’t take captive nuts that can be fitted from the front or side of the pillar. It’s got me stumped, and of course, any vids on YouTube etc only discuss 90s.

Any ideas with this at all? (Note lower mid door hinge.)

Did you check the in side? B posts have large openings on the inner side for the nut plates to fit.

Hi mate;

Yes, I checked the mid height internal cut out. I can’t access low enough via this due to it being blocked. There was no ability to access the area in line with the lower hinge bolts. I’m sure this was the case but not sure what was stopping full access. If it’s not the shape of the pillar, but now you’ve got me questioning myself!

The bottom set of door hinge bolts are accessed through the gap between the 2nd row kick panel and the back of the battery box underneath the vehicle, open to the elements. Get on your back and look up and you'll see the point. They can often drop right out, or get caught at an angle.

The mid height access point only serves the top set of bolts.

I’ll get under the vehicle and look this morning, but I’ve Sil fuel tanks fitted so I wonder if that’s why no nuts have dropped out. I bet that’s an issue now!

Thank you Duncan, you were spot on.😉

The problem with my vehicle is that I’ve had to drop the right 65 litre Sil fuel tank to be able to access the cut out. As expected, the captive nut bar had dropped down. After a lot of mucking around, I’ve got the hinge bolts to fit into the captive nuts and tightened/allingned the door, so at least the original issue is all sorted. I expect I’ll need to do the same on the left side as well.🥺

Im really happy with the Optimil hinges though, they’re a work of art compared to the factory units.👍

Safest way to prevent captive nut bar from falling
After a tip from ‘Tombie’ in the Australian based group, I made a tool to prevent the captive nut bar from moving away from the bulkhead, and it worked a treat for the remaking mid door.

Cut the head off a longer suitable size bolt. I notched it so I could use it like a screw, and slip the old hinge over it, and new one onto it. Worked perfectly and no more dropping fuel tanks to recover the bar, and I hope this helps others.
