Sorry, but how do you know this?

It seems on the face of it rather improbable due to the enormous difficulty it would cause when assembling the vehicle.

(The nut plate cannot be fixed to the bulkhead since there needs to be float on the hinges to align the doors. That being so, it would be very difficult indeed to assemble the hinge onto a nutplate that will drop down inside the bulkhead's box section if it isn't held all the time from outside the vehicle).

Indicative BYH500100 pricing (each):

LR: £1.84 + VAT (LRdirect price is clearly for a pack of 10)
Britpart OEM: £0.29 + VAT
Bearmach: £0.32 + VAT

I would personally not fit the nut plate, if only to help you in the future (or a future owner) who removes a hinge to find a nut plate dropping down inside the bulkhead Evil or Very Mad

Fitting a nut plate instead of the clip-on nut is a retrograde step. But LR do indeed seem to have used them after Puma chassis number DA440290 Shocked  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I still think that it is more likely that there has been an error in the parts book from VIN DA440290. I am not sure that the nut plate would even fit though the slot into the bulkhead box section.

Show me a photo of a vehicle with these fitted to the A post and I might believe it.

Apart from anything else, why change? There is clearly still a plentiful supply of the normal type, and the complexity of assembling the door with the two-nut plate is absurd; it will take longer, result in many bulkheads filling with lost nutplates (I don't think they'll fall out at the bottom) and risks damaging doors and panels. It makes so little sense that it is almost possible!

The only way that it would make sense would be if the bulkhead was modified at the same time so that the nut plate was accessible from inside the car, in the same way as the B post hinges. That would be a big improvement, but it would require the longer screws and a modified bulkhead. Did the part number for the bulkhead change from DA440290 as well?

Nope there was no bulkhead change at DA440290.

Mine is FAxxx so should be fitted with nut plates according to the catalogue. Not sure I'm brave enough to have a look Embarassed  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

December 2015 build - happy?

They are held captive by a spot welded cage.

Without the cage (i.e. as supplied) they're aren't captive so for a pre-DA440290 vehicle then BYH500100 are still correct  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I don't disagree with you, I was merely pointing out for future reference that landrover modified the doorposts before production ended and the old knock on type have been superceeded when purchasing through dealer.

I have no idea why they were modified so near the end when the old knock on type have been used since 1971.

I don't think I'll be replacing the A pillar Smile

Looking at both parts now. Genuine nut plate is better but would need some sort of corrosion proof coating. Not worth the hassle of getting it to fit.

Still waiting to hear back from Rimmer Bros.

Well, as Lotus says above, the clip-on nuts were only in use 4 decades.

Perhaps it was to finally address the nuts chewing out of the clips. Something LR could have achieved with some assembly paste Whistle  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

How To
Door hinge nut replacement using LR05527 Nut Plate


Tools
Torx drive socket, extension and ratchet or bar.
13mm wrench. I used a ratcheting box wrench.
Torx bolt M8 x 55mm BYG500070 - 2 required.
Philips Head Screwdrivers. Our 110 is a mix of Philips and Pozidriv.
Pliers
Mallet
Magnetic Grabber
Trim removal remover tools

Parts

LR05527 Nut Plate. One per hinge.
Spacer - Hinge A-pillar BDC710040 One or more per hinge
Shim - Hinge to Door MWC1898 One or more per hinge
Torx bolt M8 x 55mm BYG500070 Two per hinge
Torx bolt M8 x 40mm BYG500060 Two per hinge
Screw - mirror to door hinge SE604076 Two per door
Fir Tree Fastener EZM5000050 A bunch. I went through 6 on one door.
The thing the fir trees plug into on the door MWC3136. I didn't need any.
Plastic Rivet MWC9918PMA - As needed. Two per door max.
The thing the plastic rivets go into MWC9917. As needed, two per door max.
Door Pull YOO451PMA If needed.

Corrosion prevention
Anti Seize compound


I recommend you get all of the above parts and anything else on the door you may need. They are inexpensive insurance you will have everything you need. The most expensive trim item on the list is the door pull at £2.16+VAT

1. Apply corrosion protection to the nut plate.


2. Remove the door card. I've done this a couple of times now and I think it is easier with the door card off. It can be done with the card in place.

Step 3. Rig up some way to support the door while it is open. If you are doing the top hinge, roll down the window.

Do as much as possible with the door closed. It is easier if the door is held in place by the frame and latch.

4. Remove the hinge. If you are lucky, both of the A-pillar bolts will come out. I was lucky.

5. Unbolt the mirror arm from the hinge.

6. Remove the old clip on nuts. Try not to drop them into the A-pillar like I did. If any bits are missing, use a magnetic grabber to retrieve them from the A-pillar.

6.5 This is good time to spray some corrosion prevention goo into the A-Pillar

7. Using a magnetic grabber, put the nut plate into the A-Pillar. I was lucky and did not drop it.

8. Thread a spare 55mm door bolt into the top hole. It is easier if you use the longer bolt.

9. Remove the magnetic grabber

10 Put a second spare 55 mm door bolt into the bottom door hinge hole and through the BDC710040 spacer(s).

11 Use the top bolt as a handle to hold the nut plate in place. Thread the bottom bolt into the nut plate. This was only a little fiddly and not that hard at all. (Just be sure to remove the mirror first!!!!)

12 Put the correct 40mm door bolt into the top hole in the hinge and spacer.

13 Use the bottom bolt as a handle. Remove the top 55mm bolt. Swing the hinge to the correct orientation. Thread in the top 40mm bolt and get it tight enough to hold the nut plate.

14. Replace the bottom 55mm bolt with the correct 40mm part.

14.5 You didn't forget to put anti-seize on the bolts did you?????

15. Put the mirror arm back on the hinge.

16. Put the 55mm bolts and spacer(s) on the door side of the hinge.

17. Push the bolts though the door and put the nuts back on. I recommend all new hardware and anti-seize. Adjust the door alignment. I got lucky and mine went back about right.



18. Replace any broken fasteners on the door card and reassemble. Our 110 came with most of them broken.

Censored , I just lost two captive nuts inside the Sil on my Rt side drivers door while attempting to fit new Optimil hinges all around on my 110.

I can’t find any in stock in Australia which would be delivered fast (ish) as it’s now 1 Jan 23, so I found them easily available via UK eBay.

I bought 8 of these and they are at the UK airport now after 2 days, so excellent service from this seller over Christmas. You would be very hard pressed to get such good Aussie service or
from the Post Office.

I recommend the seller.
