United Kingdom 2006 Defender 90 Td5 SW Zambezi Silver
My 1989 V8 90
Thought it would be better late than never to do a post on my 1989 V8 90. Some of you will have read my build threads on my Puma 110 and 1984 Ninety as listed in my signature , but for whatever reason, time being the main one, I didn't do a full thread on this one. I have however still been logging onto Def2 daily to see what everyone is upto and search for tips!
I like to try as many 'Defender' derivatives as possible and a V8 90 has always been on the list. This one came up for sale in May 2020 and I got into it as a nice lockdown project.
Its a very genuine County Station Wagon with the correct cloth seats, stereo cassette, sunroof etc. You may have also noticed that its a G-WAC which rivet counters will know as one of the more well known official Land Rover factory registered number plates. Land Rover Ltd were indeed the first owners of this one, although I don't have any details of what it was used for. Some research shows that there were only 7 V8 90 GWACS, so this is a rare one indeed, more so than any special edition!
Its covered ~58k miles and has clearly been well looked after by multiple previous owners over its 33 years. It feels quite tight to drive still and the engine is a sweet running thing that fires instantly.
As this was a lockdown project, it meant I could tuck it away in the garage and use any spare the time to fettle. Chief amongst which was the removal of a rather medieval LPG system as this was all about retaining or returning to original condition. I also replaced the clutch slave and master cylinders, radiator, the whole ignition system, fuel pump/pipe/filter. Once it was running nicely it was time to sort the visuals.
I painted it myself in the garage, applied new replacement decals, fitted new windscreen and window seals, new mudflaps etc and sourced a correct set of rostyle wheels.
I also fitted the very 80's winch bumper I had in the garage left over from my 1984 Ninety project, mainly to stop tripping over it in my small garage.
My local LR specialist fitted a replacement rear crossmember and MOT'd it in October last year and I've since been enjoying it as an occasional commuting car and for various fun family weekend trips.
I also had the pleasure of meeting @Barondefenders for a coffee and bacon roll at Gilks Cafe recently. I'm sure if you're on Instagram you'll have seen his excellent pictures of it alongside his lovely 110 V8.
Since then I've removed the winch and put that up for sale, its not going to be used and still takes up too much space! Unfortunately, that statement also applies to the 90 and I'm now thinking of selling it since my wife and I now need two cars again for all work, school run, childcare duties. While this isn't intended to be a for sale advert, I would appreciate some guidance on value and best place to offer it for sale. While I've got a rough idea of its value, the Defender market at the moment is a bit odd and while there's plenty of price inflation being shown in adverts, I do wonder what they actually sell for. Tempted to auction it on eBay and the sale price will determine its value, just need to decide on a reserve!
Anyway, enough waffle, have some pics...

I absolutely love this little Ninety of yours, Andy! I hope it goes to a caring new home.

In terms of selling, I’d look at: Collecting Cars; Car & Classic; Auto Trader; and eBay.

Collecting Cars will possibly try to get you to set a lower reserve than you’d be comfortable with, so just keep that in mind. Charlie

I did well selling a 911 on the Collecting Cars site but yes they do tend to try to get you to reduce the reserve.

Thanks for the advise chaps. I'll check out those recommendations.
It does appear that the market will decide its value!

@defender9, yeah that S1 was a lovely thing, but was an 86" hardtop, better pic below.

Great looking Ninety - it looks just right on those Rostyles, County stripes and I love a GWAC reg!

My inner anorak can only spot one decal that isn't quite right for a 1990 MY Wink JB

What a stunning Ninety, just beautiful! Thumbs Up Bow down

How could you sell it! Better to gift it to someone to look after I'd say! Whistle

But seriously, I'd imagine that is quite a collectors item now, so needs to be sold in the right place I know this doesn't help with where, just hope it goes to an appreciative caring home. Bow down James

Badge on the front should read 90 on a G reg (they dropped the Land Rover for the year before Defender).

However, this GWAC like many other Solihull cars is highly likely a 1989 MY like yours, which would make the badge correct.

Top level geekery chaps! However I researched this and G was the crossover year. The type of grille badge also corresponds to the LR badge on the back, so when it says 'Land Rover 90' on the front, the rear badge has a full strike through. When the front badge is just '90' the rear badge subtly changes to have a split strike through.
Regardless, mine was the former and it's all been replaced like for like.
For additional anorak points, I also had to get the V8 specially made as the italic style is unavailable now, and I didn't want to fit the available straight version as it would've been wrong. Thumbs Up Instagram: l90andy

My G reg Ninety has the "Land Rover 90" badge on the front and the full strike through at the rear. Sadly the "Turbo" badge rather than the V8 though! BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group
