P400e range & how does it work
Hello


Looking at different options...

The P400 what general range does it have?

How does it work can you choose to drive in just electric, so local trips, school run etc can be purely electric or does it (the car decide)

Looking further afield whats the likelihood of a defender with a better range..

I don’t own one so can’t comment on range, but yes you can drive it in pure EV or let the car decide. I think a Defender with a range similar to the new Range Rovers 70 miles claimed range may happen but I think that will be a while away yet. 23.5MY 90 D250 X-Dynamic SE, Pangea Green

I dont own one but I have the BMW version which is inbetween. I would assume it would follow the same theme. i.e electric / hybrid / sports mode and then battery save option.

I generally use electric mode. Saying that it will start the engine if you exceed the speed / power or if it believes its needs a little more power. For example coming up a slip road onto the motorway.

I owned a Mini Countryman PHEV for two years before the 110 was delivered and my biggest concern with it was it defaulted to pure electric on start up unless the battery was too low which was fine but if you then stayed electric and were whizzing along at say 60 or 70 (it could do 83 mph in pure electric mode for about 5 minutes!) and asked for more go to say overtake then the engine would cut in stone cold at speed which couldn’t be good for the engine. In the winter I would start it in electric then switch to petrol until it was warmed up then switch back to pure electric. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come
2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed!

My company car is hybrid. The quoted range on pure battery is supposed to be 40 miles, but rarely gets above 32-35 miles in summer and 20-25 in winter. If driving in pure electric you won't actually get anywhere near these distances if you go above 30mph. It starts in electric but I always switch to hybrid unless I know I'm only doing 20miles or so.

The car does also generate electric when it brakes, which makes driving really easy as, I now pretty much drive using just the accelerator on/off and only use the brake to come to a complete stop at junctions.

If you charge battery every night, it does help mpg massively. But if you don't bother charging it you're just carry a lot of extra weight. The big win for company cars is the massive tax saving. So much so that apparently a lot of owners take the tax saving but never bother charging the cars so probably end up using more petrol, lugging the batteries about.

As a company car, hybrid is well worth having for tax purposes. As a private car, I'm not sure it would ever be economically beneficial.

My phev has a range of 27 miles in summer and 24 miles when 4 degrees C.

You have 3 manual choices EV - pure electric, hybrid - car decides and it uses both, i don't think this is particularly clever even when you set destination, and Save -holds battery power at around 85%.

Pure petrol at 60 - 70mph long trips gives around 27mpg - imperial.

Very quiet, smooth, rapid acceleration when you want it, lovely to drive, you get 3 zone temp control and solar windscreen included

Downsides - smaller boot, no under boot storage for jack and other stuff, cannot get rear cooling for dog in boot.

I aim to keep for 3 years, my next car will be retirement car and i intend to keep for 10 years (hopefully), as this will be for dog trips and holidays the boot space and rear cooling, and the fact that i worry about batteries long term life, and resale value for 10 year old battery car, may push me to diesel 250 or 300.

You need a 7kw charger at home or work, commutes of around 2x 11 miles and its excellent, tesco and some hotels have free charging at moment, which helps long journeys.

I tend to do first couple miles in hybrid and get engine warm, also if not doing long trips, do at least one commute a week in save to get engine working.

On a separate note i will once a week engage low ratio and set high ground clearance just to ensure components don't jam up

Lots of free charging out there. No good if your charging is restricted like the BMW.

If you don't plug it in, then there is no benefit. Worked out that my extra over electric cost was £67 for 1235miles covered. Petrol say 3 gallons. Not bad for a 2.5tonne 4x4

There’s a saving on the first year but that’s in the cost of your car.

There’s no saving in England for next 4 years as car costs > £40000

So unless you’re going to keep a long time…

71mile work trip in the BMW this morning....... 62.7miles of the 71miles were in EV mode. Would have been better if I didn't have the air con on as I may have nudged a few more miles in EV mode.

Only reads to 90mpg. So if its >90mpg it will still say 90mpg. Its only when it drops below 90mpg will it start to update that figure.

It was the EV range that suprised me as it's only 6kWh larger than the P400e battery (21.6 vs 15.7) but a lot different in range. At one point I had 66miles showning but dimissed it as anomaly as I was only 15miles into the journey.

Just completed >700miles and only charged once (forgot the lead!) The run up to Wales was fully loaded with top box at speed via London. 33.4mpg for the 267miles (I did have battery to start).

The run back it achieved 35.9mpg at 65mph to 70mph with zero battery (top box was removed and in my Volvo). The 3.0l straight 6 obviously not working as hard in the BMW

Thats excellent economy and I know from experience the G05 BMW is a lovely car. Why do you think the restricted fast charging on BMW - battery life?

After 3 X5s I wanted a change and the Defender does that, and to be honest I don't think i would go back - BMW too clinical in some way, although excellent at most things
