Slip on wheel spacers?
Morning folks,
I just fitted 18" sawtooths and Cooper tyres on my 90.
At full lock the tyres just catch the radius arms. I took the front wheel off and put a couple of washers
as spacers to determine the clearance I need and it's just 6-8mm.
Does anyone have a solution?
Should I look for 8mm slip-on spacers?
Are they safe?
Will I still have enough thread left for the wheel nuts?
Can anyone recommend a good brand?

Cheers

Adjust your steering stops, and I wouldn’t run the “washer” system as it won’t give the nicest ride. Only spacers I’ve seen are 30mm, and they are that size to cover the bolt heads, as they are not just slip on items.
Adjusting the stops is just a couple of turns of a spanner. Nice and cheap too. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Very Happy "Adjusting the stops is just a couple of turns of a spanner.".. Rolling with laughter . that's what I'd hoped for, but there ain't no way mine are turning without a huge fight! I chose to retreat and fight again another day.

When I rebuilt my P38 front hubs, the lock stops both snapped. It's a meaty enough thread - M12? - so I just fitted a stainless nut. Planning to do the same on the Defender when I put in the refurbed axle "at some stage". Donald

I think the 30mm is also to have enough 'meat' so as not to disintegrate on the 1st bump.

What I had done in the past is use old drum brakes, cut off the excess material, and use the frontal part (I hope my explanation is understandable) as a spacer. I think the thickness is around 5 or 6mm. It reduces the amount of thread available on the studs, but I could get away with it (I used this method to mount alloys on 10 spline hubs). If you need more space, then you can fit 2 modified drum brakes, but then you will need to replace the studs for longer ones as used on Wolfs.
But ensure that there is no build up of rust between the multiple surfaces. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
