Yes the switch is separate from the key barrel/column lock.

Try the relay bridge wire though Smile  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
2015 D90 XS SW

Have a look at the bottom of page 10 of this topic https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic47486-135.html a new technique from bradders130 to get the switch element off the ignition without drilling

Before you look to replace the ignition switch check all the wiring and individual connectors to it.
