check the fuel cut off switch and its wiring or the relay for the fuel pump.

I had a similar issue to this after some work was done and I finally traced it to the CHT sensor.
I fixed it by using contact cleaner on the connections and it went away. |

A 2.4 has neither of these things - no fuel cut-off switch and no electric fuel pump. It would be worth checking that the connectors for the relays under the seat are really tight, just checking that the relays are fully home isn't enough. When you try to pull a relay out it should feel as though you're going to pull spades from the socket. |

Did you fit an aftermarket fuel filter or a genuine one ?
Has the new fuel filter been screwed fully home. I’m just wondering if you have two issues here. First issue is new fuel filter is not sealing, more likely to happen if aftermarket, and air is getting in fuel line. Second issue is due to the first issue all the cranking you are having to do is highlighting a worn relay, poor contacts, or poor wiring connection which did not show before when starting at first crank. |

i always use Mahle filters from the site sponsor and have done for a few years, checked and double checked the filter is home which it is, but i don't think it's a fuel issue it died to quickly on first start and after attempts there is no indication of starting just a strong sounding starter motor turning.
which relay would be the culprit? i will replace it as a matter of caution 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone) 2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone) 1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone) 1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone) 1994 discovery 300tdi (gone) 90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone) Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone) |

The temperature gauge needle going to FSD with ignition on would not happen if this was a fuelling fault, it is an electrical fault (hence my suggestion to check and recheck those pesky relays as a fist step).
It may be that you have a fuelling issue as well of course, but it is unlikely. There are many old threads on here discussing Puma starting issues and the temp gauge FSD symptom. |

So strange!
I have started the defender up several times a day and the fault hasn’t returned? I’m glad it hasn’t but I’m now in a mind jail of will it happen again because i haven’t really fixed it! Which relay would the culprit be?......might give me piece of mind 2016 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 TDV8 2010 110 XS Utility 2.4TDCI 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 (gone) 2007 Discovery HSE TDV6 (gone) 1993 110 csw 200 tdi (gone) 1994 90 HT 300 tdi (gone) 1994 discovery 300tdi (gone) 90 hybrid 3.5 v8 (gone) Range rover bobtail 3.5 v8 (gone) |

If it is a relay/connection issue it is likely to be either the ignition relay or the starter relay under the o/s front seat, the former being marginally more likely than the latter.
You have very similar symptoms to mine when I had a starting issue (one of several) with my 2.4. In the end I pulled out those two relays and carefully bent a slight kink into each leg, after which they were extraordinarily tight in their sockets. That particular problem has not (yet) returned. The more interesting one was when I found that if I open the driver's electric window whilst the heater plugs are illuminated the engine won't start. Repeatable and consistent, and Landrover say quite impossible! This proved to be a PI artefact (since disabling the PI stops it from happening). I don't know if it is unique to my vehicle, I suspect it is. It will either be an earth/noise problem or an EMI problem. |

Might be of use: a few weeks ago I had a an intermittent (then permanent!) no crank issue and a bunch of random error codes thrown up. After chasing relays, ignition switch, fuses, starter & wiring for a week, it turned out to be a loom connector not seated properly in the engine compartment (see photo, lower right hand side). Contact cleaner & cable ties (to prevent a recurrence) sorted it.
