Only 2 years late...
It wasn't the brake cleaner that killed my alternator. I (foolishly) nipped the wire I ran to the rev counter under the alternator's cover when putting it together. The insulation failed and the short killed the alternator. Replacement alternator in place, correctly routed wiring, and the rev counter works perfectly. 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power |

I think it may be permanent live. I am currently doing a hybrid built, repurposing my old Disco trayback into a "defender" ute for farm use. I have to build my own wiring loom so have been checking and labling all wires. The alternator wiring on the engine is as it was on the Disco so is wired for tacho. When checking the 3 wire outlets I did find the one which was for the tacho to be a permanent live.

W terminal shouldnt produce a voltage when the engine is not running. It outputs a raw a.c. voltage proportional to engine speed with a rms voltage of 6-8v

Thanks for the replies so I’ve had it checked out and NO It’s not live until the ignition is turned on.
